We, as societies, let people die all the time for economic ‘good’. We permit a level of toxins to be pumped into the air that quantifiably kill in the name of economic progress. We send soldiers to go and fight wars of economic interest, whilst doing nothing where we have no interests. We don’t pay enough for everyone to have health coverage without limit - some treatments are too expensive is often the only reason to deny treatment.

We are constantly doing a cost vs life evaluation. Sometimes incorrectly, sometimes with different personal choices on what those costs are and what a life is worth. But we make them.

Would you accept a full lockdown like we have today if it saved no lives? What about 1? 10? 1,000? 1 million?

The argument of what a life is worth is crass, but necessary. There will be wide opinions, but don’t make the argument of economy vs life a night/day preserve of one group of people or party against another. It is a spectrum we are all on.

Also, on dichotomy - There is more to unpack - you can reduce economic cost and maximise life without a linear trade-off. Eg, shielding the sick and infirm will impact the economy less and save more people than shielding the young only, which will hurt the economy a lot for very little life saving.
The real question is why doesn't the left understand this AT ALL! (Present company exempt)

    • Amid Pandemic and Recession, Ivanka Trump-Led #FindSomethingNew Campaign Denounced as 'Stunningly Tone Deaf'

A White House initiative to compel American workers to find different jobs as the coronavirus pandemic rages and millions are out of work is under fire for what critics are describing as a thoughtless tagline: "Find something new."

We now are in a second lockdown. What do you think now? The death rate is drastically lower than it was at its peak. This whole world has gone totally insane.

Welcome back... I think we should have kept businesses open the whole time and mandated using masks when shopping. I think masks work and we were lied to about their need and effectiveness.

Yes, masks work. We should all mask up, particularly indoors. Indoor dining (or whatever, if it means taking masks off) is incredibly stupid. And given that, the restaurant and hospitality industries are basically ****ed in the short to medium term and need help.

The early guidance on masks was a major error - as far as I can tell it was driven by fear that if the public bought up the masks, the PPE shortage for healthcare workers would've been even worse. Instead of saying "masks are great but we don't have enough so stay home until we produce more" they said "masks don't really work" which was wrong wrong wrong.

                          • Personal anecdote time. 2 weeks ago, my youngest daughter had a fever. Her mother took her to a clinic and had her tested for Covid. That was the morning of July 2nd. We got the result (negative, yay) TEN DAYS LATER, on July 12th. 'Murica, y'all!

School reopening planning proceeds. I honestly don't know if they can square the circle. Kids are really good at spreading germs, but in my experience they can be taught to wear masks and wash hands. It can likely be done, somehow. Distance learning doesn't work very well, even for my kids who are pretty advanced for their ages. Of course, if we had even semi-competent leadership we might be able to open without so much concern. Many other countries are able to do so because they took the appropriate steps. But not 'Murica. Oh, no. We'll do it OUR way. The Max Power way.

                            • In Korea and Taiwan the kids all wear masks and they have shields all around their desks.

However, their entire societal response is much more disciplined where everyone is wearing masks, all the time, without all this ignorant drama about rights.

I've heard it said by American school board decision makers that children are getting the virus at low rates (dumb thinking) so the risk of them getting infected is low.

EVEN if that were true, they can pick up the virus and spread it when they get home, like wildfire to the rest of society.

I think distance learning should be given another shot, I don't accept the narrative that it just doesn't work.

When something doesn't work, doesn't mean it won't ever work, it just means we need to learn what all the challenges were and address those.

This distance learning took place when none of the schools were setup for it, so they had to scramble at the last minute to even get it up. A more thoughtful approach could easily be successful.

I think also a lot of the resistance to distance learning is it's just driving parents crazy who don't want their kids home all day with no break, especially while trying to work.
