It doesn't say anywhere in that article that Robert Engle even had a gun. In fact when it says the shooter "shot himself in the struggle" that makes me think Engle must have grappled with him.

Edit: in other articles it says that after the shooter accidentally shot himself, Robert Engle went to his car, got his gun and then held the shooter at gunpoint until the police arrived. So the gun wasn't actually used to stop the shooter, but simply as a means to keep him under arrest.
