Gotta go back to 2005 for Katrina... So, how many would have died if we were getting hit by cat 5 hurricanes every year or 3? They still might not make the list, Katrina was partly self-inflicted.
And for the last 20 or so years, including the last 12, there has indeed been an uptick in the number of hurricanes and the number of powerful hurricanes. The theory doesn't say anything about where those hurricanes will happen to strike.
Hurricane activity isn't picking up. It's been steadily high since 1995. If it takes us being hit by a couple high wind speed ones to remind us of the fact that hurricanes have been here the whole time, causing death and destruction, well what a ****ty ****ing country we are.
Here you go:
our analyses suggest that interdecadal hurricane activity was subdued during the warm mean climatic state of the MCA. It subsequently became more pronounced during the LIA and, after a brief transitional state characterised by enhanced variability between 1850 and 1900, then returned to a more subdued state during the late industrial period (1950–2010), an episode of distinct climatic warming probably triggered by a combination of anthropogenic activity and a positive phase of the AMO37. Remarkably, the interdecadal behaviour of hurricane activity does not appear to persist as strongly during the warmer mean climatic states of the last millennium
Bill Maher wont be telling us about that research

Since 2005, hundreds of Americans and thousands of humans have died from Atlantic hurricanes. Hurricanes don't often annihilate cities; events like Katrina are outliers always. Instead, they cause flooding, fell trees, gut buildings... and all of that leads to some death. Despite no category 4 or 5 hurricane making landfall in the US since 2005, large, powerful, deadly hurricanes have still been striking the US and killing people, and it's been about as bad during the last 12 years as it's been since 1995 when hurricane activity picked up. Outside the US, where the always rarer category 4 and 5 hurricanes happen to have been hitting recently, it's been particularly bad. Across the world, where there are other types of cyclones driven by warm water, tens of thousands have died.
Not in our neck of the woods. If the theory doesn't say anything about where they hit, why assume we'll be hit more often with bigger storms? Isn't that the assumption? So yes, a 12 year lull is relevant.
Its picking up in the USA... Thats why Bill Maher was hoping "climate change deniers" lived in Irma's path. He sounds like one of these religious fundamentalists who welcome mother nature's (God's) wrath on the sinners.Last edited by Lorizael; September 11, 2017, 11:13.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

it's not all that unusual for a particular geographic region to not be struck by them for a little bit.

Kid - a point for repeated attempts at humor - but comedy usually works on the shock of recognition. Where is the twist in that last -a follow-up to the holocaust denier accusation, which actually displayed a smidgen of wit- surprise me if you want to make me laugh. Humor in trolling = style, so do keep trying.
