I thought the scale was based on wind speed, but of course I'm talking about big hurricanes hitting the USA...thats what inspired Bill Maher's rantOriginally posted by Lorizael View PostIf your only definition of an "active" hurricane season is one in which hurricanes with particular parameters that exceed an arbitrary scale calibrated to human construction techniques cross a specific political border not even remotely related to hurricane behavior...

Wind speed is the parameter used for the scale, but why a particular range of wind speeds is category 3 or 4 is based on how much damage it could theoretically cause to buildings. Hurricanes of lesser categories can still be large, energetic, and deadly. But more importantly, the lack of category 4+ hurricanes making landfall in the US since 2005 is not evidence against (a) global warming, (b) the threat of global warming, or (c) the prediction that global warming will lead to more powerful hurricanes. If you only want to make some pedantic point about how no category 4+ hurricanes have made landfall in the US since 2005, then (1) I don't care and (2) the people who died during Hurricane Sandy really don't care.Originally posted by Berzerker View PostI thought the scale was based on wind speed, but of course I'm talking about big hurricanes hitting the USA...thats what inspired Bill Maher's rantClick here if you're having trouble sleeping.

Do you suppose all the Americans who haven't died in cat 4+ hurricanes over the past dozen years care? New Orleans could have been hit 2 or 3 more times. And yes, the lack of 4+ hurricanes does have implications. The theory holds that more energy in the system will produce more hurricanes with greater strength. The 'pedantic point' the guest on Bill Maher was making is US hurricanes haven't been as active the last dozen years. She was responding to Bill Maher's doom and gloom rant based on the fact hurricane activity appears to be picking up. A big hurricane hits us and he's off on his high horse while he ignores all the years of relative calm. You do understand that kind of 'logic' will always be supported no matter how many years before we get hit again? Her point was Maher ignores context...Hurricanes of lesser categories can still be large, energetic, and deadly. But more importantly, the lack of category 4+ hurricanes making landfall in the US since 2005 is not evidence against (a) global warming, (b) the threat of global warming, or (c) the prediction that global warming will lead to more powerful hurricanes. Hundreds of Americans and thousands of humans have died over the last 12 years because Atlantic hurricanes have been powerful and numerous.Originally posted by Berzerker View PostDo you suppose all the Americans who haven't died in cat 4+ hurricanes over the past dozen years care? New Orleans could have been hit 2 or 3 more times.
And for the last 20 or so years, including the last 12, there has indeed been an uptick in the number of hurricanes and the number of powerful hurricanes. The theory doesn't say anything about where those hurricanes will happen to strike. And yes, the lack of 4+ hurricanes does have implications. The theory holds that more energy in the system will produce more hurricanes with greater strength.
Hurricane activity isn't picking up. It's been steadily high since 1995. If it takes us being hit by a couple high wind speed ones to remind us of the fact that hurricanes have been here the whole time, causing death and destruction, well what a ****ty ****ing country we are.She was responding to Bill Maher's doom and gloom rant based on the fact hurricane activity appears to be picking up.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

CNN: Hurricanes are going to wipe out human civilization, even the babies. Oh and here's some pictures of Hitler.
Aeson: But I've never seen a hurricane or a Nazi.
CNN: Yes you did. You just saw them on the Trusted Name in News, and we're liberal just like you. So finish your kool aid.

There was a time
When I was so close minded
News wasn't much, of a friend of mine
The tables have turned, yeah
Cause me and ignorance parted
That kind of news, was the Breitbart kind
Now listen
All I want, is some news I can't resist
I get, all I, need to know, from the CNN anchor desk
I was denying when I met you ...
Now climate agreeing with you
Your news is all ... about Nazis
The weather was fine when I met you
Now we're drowning in typhoons
Do what you do - news to me
Now there's not even breathing room
Between Harvey and Irma
Yeah, you cry when we're warming seas
Must be the coolaid
It's down on me
Yeah I got to tell you one thing
It's been on my mind
CNN, I gotta say
We're partners in crime
You got that liberal info
What you give to me
Takes me blinders away
Now the word out on the net
Is the Nazis in Charlottesville
If Trump keeps fanning the flames
It's a fire we can't resist

Is it all right if I just sit here and think about Bear Market prognosticators who write books about the coming market crash saying that they were right about predicting the crash in 2008 or whenever when in fact they said the same thing about it coming every other year? No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I would like to encourage more comedy like this in political trolling here - Kid, for all that I find the point behind your last post to not be the case in any way whatsoever (aside from the hurricane hysteria-stirring they and everyone else on TV were doing already half a week too soon, before they knew enough to justify it) it's still well-done humor, and the best post I've seen out of you in forever; more of that, please.
-Aeson has always had excellent comedy instincts, but needs no encouragement.
