  • Vive la France!

Le Big Mac (as titled by a Brit newspaper) stopped the populist onslaught - for now.

Has this turned the tide or is it merely a little reprieve before the next wave of insanity takes gound?

    Discuss.

    Simple answer: depends.

Was that a political comment or a just sneaky product placement for McDonalds and Adult diapers.

So far McD's isn't paying (them bastards) for my support so I have to go with the polit. statement

On a more serious note - I hope Macron can change things for the better in France, it will be difficult enough....

Agreed. I think France has an easier path in that direction than the US currently.

And I forgot about the paper towel placement also.

I suspect there is cohabitation ahead and government gridlock. Macron has no party and is trying to start one from scratch. Currently, he has zero elected party members in the legislature and only 14 confirmed candidates with well over two hundred needed for a majority. The established parties have all the big names and are incumbents so they are very likely to take most of the seats leaving Macron as president t but with no control over the legislature.

If Macron proves to be ineffective, and he looks like he will be, then what happens? Five more years of double digit unemployment, five more years of a not so great economy (which is more likely to happen if the EU tries to punish the UK for daring to tell it no), five more years of regular Islamic terrorism, five more years of uncontrolled migration of violent unskilled unemployable Muslims from the third world...

Yeah, Macron better pull a rabbit out of the hat or else it probably will mean Le Pen in five years. So far Macron's plan to go on a spending binge but have Germany pay for it via "Euro bonds" has been rejected by Germany. His talk of punishing the UK risks Frances largest export market (especially for agricultural goods) so maybe he should rethink that trade war. He'll, he will have to flip flop on most of his positions not to be a failure and then hope the legislature goes alone with it.

                      of course it depends.

france was never as stupid as the UK or the USA so they made the "right" choice.

this doesn't fix the underlining problems, just gives more time to correct them

macron's only choice is to go back hard to his socialist roots and do a flip flop faster than you can say paine de provence

also with macron merkel's run out of support. now it's only finland and holland and they ain't support. they're peanuts without whiskey

I get the feeling that pretty much all enthusiasm for this man is driven by the sentiment, "Oh God please not that woman." He appears to want nothing other than the status quo with slight modifications, and nobody especially wants that per se but they're scared that Le Pen would sic stormtroopers on them. Is this accurate?

                          yes

although macron would propably deny it and say he will bring "real reform"

I think he got many votes because of Trump. It's very sad. Americans don't even want to visit France anymore, let alone immigrate there.
