  • Do you work too much?

As of lately, been doing a bit over 180 hours a week. Closer to 200 few times. A bit knackered.

I think I have a problem. Do you? how much do you work and what is too much? Out of, say 180, I enjoy 80 the most. The rest is complete and utter BS. I'm on a sick leave today, not because I'm sick, but because I did not feel like going. The whole day was meaningless meetings with people wanting to sound important. So I called in sick instead. Will do the same tomorrow, return on Wednesday and read hundreds of emails that are 95 % pointless and unnecessary. I want to just ... lazy around. Watch Game of Thrones, eat pizza, no cleaning, nothing. I've 18 unused vacation days for this year and I have no time to have them. Do you share this problem of too much work?

Probably. I am pretty happy with my job right now. Will get a solid break in another week.

Considering there is only 168 hours in a week... I need your time travel device or you should consider quitting the drugs.

        To be real:
As a young student I regularly did 100+ hour weeks. Probably 60-70% efficiency.

As an older student I worked 120 hour weeks for the first half of 2006. I figure the efficiency was 70-80%. It made me ill though, I can't maintain that for long times. At the time I thought I was incapable of it (during 2004-2005 I probably averaged less than 30 hours a week). I dropped back down to averaging 40-50 hours a week and 60-70% efficiency after my intense period.

As a postdoc I regularly worked 60-70 hours, but the efficiency was often 60-70%.

As a married man when I am with my family I work 30 hour weeks (And recently 20 hour weeks). The 30 hour weeks seem perfect, 20 hour weeks are unsatisfactory. It is an issue between I and my wife.
She thinks that the 20 hours should be great and I should be 100% efficient, but I still stay below 80% (actually probably 60-70% with my family).

As a married man when I am not with my family (for example right now) I work 50-70 hour weeks. And I get a lot more downtime, although I miss my family. I probably come in at 60-80% efficiency though.

Not entirely sure how to estimate my weekly hours. During the week, I generally get to campus around 9 (sometimes earlier, sometimes later) and get home from work around 10:30. So that's 67.5 hours, but that doesn't count the weekend (where I work every other Saturday and do homework every weekend) or any time spent on homework, papers, reading for class, grading, prepping for discussion/lab, etc. But at the same time, I'm not working nonstop between 9 and 10:30. There's driving time and lunch time and mini-breaks in there. I guess it probably works out to something like 70-80 hours per week? But I am busy enough to be ferociously tired and very glad that it all comes to an end in a week.

                Only 180 hours a week?!?

                That's nothing.

I used to dream of working only 180 hours a week!

I work when I want. By "work" I mean I play mobile games. I didn't work much this year, though the past couple weeks I did put up a new website which was maybe 20 hours. About 2 - 5 hours of maintenance on websites a week.

Most of my time I spend shopping for rare fruit and flowering tree seeds/seedlings online.
