I would support the removal of an obese American in a scuba suit as well...

Not saying that Berz is obese but since we were dealing in stereotypes...

What academic consensus? By what standard are totalitarians logical, rational, or any other term for "not unhinged?" Unless you're simply using it as a synonym for "naturalistic" or "not religious."

I'd argue that 20th cent. totalitarisms had both distinctively modern (utilizing modern mass organizations, mass media, modern science/tech providing the tools for war and mass killing etc.) and anti-modern features and strong rational and irrational (paranoia, hyper-nationalism, racism, mysticism - in case of Italy/Germany clear references towards the oh so glorious past that never existed that way; while Stalin was more about the oh so glorious future that never came around) elements as well. Fascism, Stalinism etc weren't exactly the most coherent ideologies...

              101 on the world.

              pre ww2.
the world can move forward with science alone. science and reason can solve all the world's problems. those that can't be solved now, will be solved in the future through science and reason (clean englightment principle)

post ww2 (post modernism) - science was used for the first scientific genocide in history, obviously, something is amiss. return to the metaphysical (god, astrology, snake oil)

modernity - communism: man can clearly be the leader of his destiny. by applying concrete economic models aimed at bringing down kings/queens/capitalists, humanity can prosper as a whole for the good of all. the racist exploitative jungle that was capitalism can finally be put to rest in the dustbin of history. through an initial phase of socialism, eventually humanity will reach communism - aka nirvana (notice the eschatological approach is similar to christianity's?)

That distinction might be popular in certain circles, but it fails to adress that there were rational *and* irrational factors driving stuff way before WW2, and even before the age of enlightenment (which was itself multi-faced, not purely about reason, even when this is what many ppl refer to today when they talk about it), as well as after it.

It's true that the aftermath of WWII put a damper on utopian futurism, for a time at least. It certainly discredited eugenics nicely. But I would not expect such setbacks to be permanent.

Don't ask him why. He will never explain it.

Here is my two cents as I haven't really looked at this thread until now.

The ban solves nothing and adds nothing to security. It doesn't make anyone more safe. It isn't even a full burkha. It isn't like some Daesh dude can hide in one. The ban is illogical. Clamping down on banning a simple head scarf? Why not ban all religious hats too? Come on, Ben.. You know better.

Either you support a complete ban of all religious head gear or you are a hypocrite.

It is just a ****ing scarf. What if it was someone wearing a scarf on their head to protect from the sun and they weren't even Muslim? Would you ban that too?

I don't get how this ban would help improve security. You are alienating a community where communication needs to be improved. If you want improved security, start talking to people as human beings! Advocating a ban that could cause serious resentment and blowback seems contrary to security and democracy.

BTW, didn't the French high court strike down the ban entirely?
