  • Austria Does not Disappoint

They already gave us the man who defined 20th century, and they must have been a bit upset being ignored through the beginning of 21st.

However they are ready to lead again.

Austria's Constitutional Court will announce on Friday whether the May 22 presidential election, which a far-right candidate was narrowly defeated, must be held again because of widespread irregularities in the way some ballots were counted.

Norbert Hofer of the anti-immigration Freedom Party, who would have been the first far-right head of state in the European Union, lost the run-off vote by less than a percentage point to former Greens leader Alexander Van der Bellen.

A re-run would reopen a debate that split Austria almost evenly, pitting town against country, and blue-collar workers worried about immigration and falling living standards against the more highly educated.

That familiar debate would, however, take place in a changed European climate after Britain voted last week to leave the European Union - a referendum in which similar concerns about immigration and jobs featured prominently.

    Next country to exit EU?

It's eerie because i knew an austrain from another forum and he always stroke me as very rational.
now the only think that's rational is his style

he seems convinced his country is overun with immigrants and that bascially the whole political spectrum is left wing for allowing them to stay

    :shrugs:

I can't understand how people delude themselves so much

but yeah probably a lot of candidates for exit.

I'm positive that in the end only greece will remain as a memberof the EU and after 4 or 5 years we'll all be looking eachother wondering why we are pressuring ourselves?

Well, if they hold the new elections the right will be even more galvanized, given how close they got to the win the first time around. If they are voted in, I think it is a certainty that during their "rule" Austria will be moving out of the EU to pastures new.

i think that the president has a largely ceremonial role in austria. but of course it's a worrying sign that a far-right candidate may be elected.

Yes, much better to continue down the path of socialism, open borders, and Islamisation of Europe. Clearly it has been working well.

You are right (Cockney)... it's only presidential elections, but

Norbert Hofer of the anti-immigration Freedom Party narrowly failed to become the European Union’s first far-right head of state in Austria’s presidential run-off last month. His party has, however, challenged that result and a ruling is pending.

Britain’s Brexit vote last week to leave the European Union has emboldened populist, anti-EU parties across the continent, including the Freedom Party (FPO) and France’s National Front, which called on Friday for a “Frexit” referendum.

FPO leader Heinz-Christian Strache has taken a more cautious view, saying only that an Austrian referendum on the issue might become a party objective in the future. But Hofer went further in an interview published on Sunday.

“If a course is set within a year further towards centralisation instead of taking (the EU’s) core values into account, then we must ask Austrians whether they want to be members,” he told the tabloid newspaper Oesterreich.

Hofer and his allies believe the bloc should be based on economic rather than political union.

“The founding fathers (of the EU) wanted to ensure closer economic cooperation because states that cooperate economically do not wage war against each other,” he said. “That worked very well until the political union was founded.”
              .
Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern has said Austria will not hold a referendum on EU membership, which the country’s media have dubbed an “Auxit” or “Oexit” vote, a reference to Oesterreich, which means Austria in German.

But the two parties in his often-divided centrist coalition government must find a way to work together until 2018 and win over voters or face a snap parliamentary election that polls suggest the FPO would win.

edit: either way something must change soon or FPO will be winning in the main elections too, and how likely is that given that nothing changed during past 8 years?

actually that worked very well untill the single currency was formed.

the raw materials for waging war (steel, coal and nuclear) were pooled together under one authority from the begginning.

also there is no "political union" it is a dictate of the lender to the borrower (a result of said single currency system)
