  • He sees persecution as a badge of honour, and sees being smacked about as justification that he has a cross to bear. He sees this thread as successful because he likes self-flagellation, intermixed with "beating the bishop" of Rome.
One, if it were just me, this thread wouldn't have gone 1,700 posts. There are quite a few high volume 'Ben' threads.

And Two, I was poking fun at that. I don't think this thread is particularly good either. I don't take myself that seriously.

      His remark is unsupported BS.

Abuse happens at a far higher rate in the Catholic church even now. Public schools have millions of kids. Ben truly is full of ****.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Maybe you shouldn't tell people they can't leave a religion. You truly are a dipsh*t. You are just like Trump.

        • He is downplaying child molestation once again. Priests are still diddling kids and you don't really have any answers. Fact: Cases of rape (especially involving a child) are disgustingly underreported because of fear of reprisals and shame.
Ok. Assuming that the patterns of the 80s are continued on, almost all the abuse cases were reported within 25 years. It's been 25 years since 1990. I don't see the evidence behind the claim that the only reason they dropped so substantially is because of underreporting in that particular cohort.

You said the rate of abuse for Catholic priests was 50 percent. You are woefully uninformed on this particular issue.

You do realize many case came to light years later? You really have no clue what you are talking about again. And abuse still happens quite consistently.

Oh Ben I was trolling you hard. But I was using your Trump like logic. I heard it was 50%, therefore half of priests are molesters.

Not really. They are safer in a catholic school than elsewhere.

They are safer in a Catholic school? Highly unlikely considering the rate of abuse is much higher.

                          • As the National Catholic Register's reporter Wayne Laugesen points out, the federal report said 422,000 California public-school students would be victims before graduation — a number that dwarfs the state's entire Catholic-school enrollment of 143,000.
As compared with the 50 incidents a year. Even the worst cases of 800 per year are a drop in the bucket compared with abuse rates in public schools. But then, what do I know, it's just an op-ed piece from a totally biased source.

                              • Did you even read the study they reference?

The study isn't specifically about sex abuse..

It's about Sexual Misconduct... as defined in the study as.
The behaviors included in the review are physical, verbal, or visual. Examples
                                include touching breasts or genitals of students; oral, anal, and vaginal penetration;
showing students pictures of a sexual nature; and sexually-related conversations, jokes,
                                or questions directed at students.
                                As noted in the Preface...

It is important to note some of the Department’s reservations about the findings in the literature
review. Specifically, the author focuses in large measure on a broad set of inappropriate behaviors
designated as “sexual misconduct,” rather than “sexual abuse,” which is the term used in the
statute. Specifically, section 5414(a)(3) of the ESEA requires the Secretary of Education to
conduct “[a] study regarding the prevalence of
                                sexual abuse
                                in schools. . . .”
                                (emphasis added)
The distinction between “sexual misconduct” and “sexual abuse” is significant in legal and other
                                terms.
So sexual jokes and sexually related conversations are being lumped in with actual sexual abuse.
Apples and Oranges... You can't look at any totals or estimates from this study if you are talking about actual sexual abuse.
                                Keep on Civin'
RIP rah, Tony Bogey & Baron O
