  • How correct are your opinions / how true are your beliefs?

For purposes of this thread, only count the opinions/beliefs that a. you consider to be relevant/important and that b. you think that only a sane/knowledgeable person could disagree with. For example, for purposes of this thread my belief that steak should be cooked medium rare is not sufficiently relevant/important (although for the record it is 90% correct, since it's sometimes acceptable to cook a steak rare), and my belief that the earth revolves around the sun is not something that a sane/knowledgeable person would disagree with (and my belief in this belief is not something that a sane/knowledgeable person would disagree with, and so on).

No poll because that sounds like work.

My metaphysical beliefs, and my beliefs about their significance, are definitely correct. I mean, they came to me during an out of body experience at the end of 5 weeks of isolation and contemplation; how could they possibly be wrong? My confidence in some of the beliefs that radiate out from my core beliefs varies significantly, from very high for certain aspects of how humans communicate, to very low for things like the best way to structure human society. I have mid to low confidence in my inherited beliefs about politics and economics.

Well, there's very little I'd consider 'my' opinions that haven't been based on the opinions of other people.

Anything in the catechism I'd put in one category. "Abortion is wrong"

Category two would be empirical things I can verify through my own experience. "Texas has hot weather in the summer"

Category three would be things that are considered laws of nature. "momentum is equal to the velocity times the mass of an object"

Category four would be any well documented historical event in the age of photography. "Hitler invaded the Soviet Union."

First four I generally have a lot of confidence in, around 99 percent, plus.

Category five would be any well documented historical event between the age of photography and the age of print.

I choose to believe the following with insufficient, without, or against evidence:

        a) people are inherently good
        b) there is a higher reason for existence
        c) my own life is meaningful outside my perspective
        d) my future holds much value

I try to have correct opinions.

I have changed my opinions/beliefs in the past when I was presented with contradicting facts which seem to be correct.

Yes trying to understand every POV is the keystone to learning.

I only believe things that are true.

I find that there is an inexorable pull for the majority of people to believe my opinions and beliefs over time, which is only natural.

I can't really think of a major opinion or belief that I've expressed on poly over the years that either hasn't come to pass, or I've been vindicated on, or is moving towards my stance, since basically ever. A few I'd say are heading in the right direction, but people don't even know it yet...

You think Poly has been moving towards accepting that we should be nicer?

I think that's one of the obvious ones: of course it is better to be nicer, but poly clearly isn't ever likely to be ready for such a revolutionary change in its attitude. I still feel vindicated in pursuing that path.
