They don't recognize the name, but it sounds vaguely like some Middle East hellhole, and they assume they're being asked a question about something topical rather than a made up city from a Disney movie. Thus, they answer what they have a decent reason to suspect is the real question: "Do you support bombing Middle East hellhole X (which is probably a source of terrorism)?" It makes sense why a fair number of people would say yes.
Yes, a large number of people don't mind to support murder of real people, regardless how fictional the enemy may actually be, whether it is Jafar or some actual families on the ground, they do not care one iota, yet they are in favour of spreading death and destruction.

It does not read well for the rest of us either when there is such a large volume of bloodthirsty idiots among us.

In 2003 there was (whatever was left of) US governmental credibility put on the line with the case for WOMD, so many of those who chose to support the action did so by deciding to be naive and assume that the government is not outright lying.

That was a case of being mislead for a large portion of the pro-war supporters, while this one today just demonstrates that the rhetoric went so far during the last decade, that a quarter of the population is outright ready to accept murder in far away places without discrimination whatsoever.

I certainly don't think answering yes to this question reflects well on people, but I think the meaning of a yes answer is slightly different than what's implied.

i'm not sure any troll can keep up an act like that for 13 years. but if he is, then good work.

And don't forget, people will answer dumb questions with dumb answers just to appear they know what they're being asked.
Always ironic because they looking stupid by trying to not look stupid.
Late night talk shows prove it all the time by going out on the streets and asking nonsense questions.

So how many respondents knew that it was a fictional country? Americans aren't the idiots here, at least not those who didn't fall for this.

Since that wasn't asked, we can only guess. But I would guess that the number was pretty high based on the answers. Especially assuming that some of those that said they wouldn't support it, didn't know it either.

This is a troll, not scientific, or actually meant to see how many people would support bombing a country for no reason.

Maybe they knew it is a fictional country, or maybe they just didn't want to admit that they never heard of the country. Probably a lot of people fall into those two categories.

Actually it was both. The company that did this does a lot of reputable polls and used a similar methodology.
