Most universalists aren't into the notion of Hell. Or consider that Christ has emptied Hell on Holy Saturday (I believe that is part of the Orthodox view - Elok can fix my error)

When that part of the Bible was read during mass during my Catholic upbringing, the emphasis on that passage was "Forgive them for they know not what they do," i.e. the sin was ignorant rather than malicious, whereas malice still requires one to seek forgiveness.
Aren't you switching your goalposts . They knew what they were doing was wrong - the ignorance was on how big their wrong was (not just killing an enemy of Rome, but killing God).

To add, when St. Stephen was killed, he merely asked for forgiveness for his stoners, no they knew not stuff (Acts 7:60).
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
    - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

I wasn't aware that I had any goalposts - I was just explaining what I was taught. I don't believe in an afterlife or divine forgiveness or anything like that, so it doesn't bother me at all that some denominations have implicit forgiveness while others have explicit forgiveness - about the only thing that bugs me about people's afterlife beliefs is when they have masturbatory fantasies about other people being tortured for all eternity (this is somewhat understandable in the case of people like Hitler, but is utterly absurd, despicable, and pitiable in the case of people like Carl Sagan or Richard Dawkins or Charles Darwin etc).

Roman soldiers killing an enemy of Rome is something the soldiers would know is wrong?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

They would (or at least should have) know the excessive cruelty was wrong.

Sometimes I actually wish religion was real, just so I could watch Jesus return to earth and kick the **** out of the likes of you and Ben.
Communism is not giving your stuff to the poor. It's blaming others for your poverty and taking hostile action against them.

No such thing as Hippie Jesus. Jesus was always very hard at work doing the will of the Father.

You're being too subtle as usual, Loin.

You do know that when the communists took over Russia they actually were largely living in poverty due to the oppression and abuses of others, right?

If you think Jesus wasn't a socialist though, you need to learn to read the words in the bible, rather than just looking at the pictures in the childrens version.

The first thing wrong with this is that your ideology is materialist. That makes sense because that's what you are, a materialist. It's impossible for you to think like a Christian.

The second thing wrong with this is that Russian communism was a failure, and so then are you.
