I was a never a real communist although I did attend some Socialist Workers Party meetings.

Though, to be fair to chegitz, he was more of a Trotskyist than a Stalinist... I realize you were just using it for example though.

I was thinking of a specific time when people were saying that Stalin was a bad person and Chegitz sarcastically replied with something like "yeah, and he ate puppies too!", as though in the hopes that people would say "well, he did orchestrate the deaths of millions, but it's not like he ate puppies..."

I think what happened to Chegitz is that he started out in the "Communism is awesome in theory!" camp, and then enough people said "but it sucks in practice" that he felt that he had to defend it in practice, and that's very difficult to do with a soul or with a straight face.
