a few weeks ago, when work was a little slow, i decided that it might be fun to try to troll the globo news message boards. for those that don't know, globo is a corporation that controls a lot of the news and media in brazil. it's fairly right wing and supported the dictatorship; it's famously anti-workers party.

i decided to pose as woman, because if there's one thing a right wing arsehole loves, it's a woman who's as much of a c*nt as he is. so basically i started to post some anti-workers party, anti-poor, anti-favela things and got some good reactions. but i soon stopped. you see even in jest i could never go as far some people there do in earnest.

i saw stories about street kids and people in the comments section openly calling for their execution. any article that deals with slums will attract people who call for the slum's destruction and/or the murder of its inhabitants. recently there was the 10 year anniversary of a massacre involving four policemen who went on a killing spree in poor communities because they were unhappy about an anti-corruption probe; they killed 29 people. it's hard to imagine a more outrageous case and there is no dispute about the facts; everyone agrees about what happened. yet there were people there saying the policemen were heroes and that those poor people probably had it coming anyway.

or a more mundane example from today, there's a story about a water tank in a slum that was damaged during a recent gun battle and it seems not to have been repaired.

here are a couple of comments:

Deixa secar toda a água daí para morrerem todos de sede
let the water run dry so that they all die of thirst.

Arrumem a caixa e táka-lhe veneno, não vamos perder grande coisa!
get the water tank and fill it full of poison, it won't be any great loss!

and other similarly charming contributions abound. basically, i got out trolled by people who weren't trolling...

But yeah, 20% is still pretty impressive.
It's a lot who are daily users ... and still growing. Internet.org is helping ensure another billion people who can't afford the internet will equate Facebook with the internet.

As part of the financial results for its fourth quarter, Facebook today announced a number of new milestones. The social network has now passed 1.23 billion monthly active users. Of those, daily active users passed 757 million on average du

Or they are all trolling, trying to one-up the other guy, who they think is not trolling. I have a feeling this is how the republican party became the way it is now in the US.

it's possible i suppose, but one routinely hears these kinds of attitudes expressed, albeit in a more guarded and euphemistic way, in real life. this is also a country where some people take to the streets to ask for the restoration of the military dictatorship; there's certainly no shortage of right wing arseholes.
