Do you think that making it legal for public official to take bribes will somehow make the problem of corruption go away? 'Redefining' obesity is as ridiculous as Bugs' 'magical' solution to solve corruption as a counter to my analogy

Yes. That's easy. However you'll notice I'm talking about the act of losing weight, not the label of obesity. Rather trickier to redefine, that one.

Define corruption, without reference to a supporting legal status. Good luck.

Fine. We can go with 'politicians performing ethically incorrect acts'. Whatever. If you'd rather nitpick the analogy, be my guest. Go count calories. I have a some trouble with that. How much is your balance today? If I walk 30 minutes per day, and do between two and three hours of swimming (breaststroke, no, i don't know the water temperature, I guess its close to the daily mean) over the course of the week, the rest pretty much sedentary activities, how many calories should I eat to maintain my weght (85kg)? I'll only eat refined sugar, BTW, but that shouldn't affect my health, since calories are calories, right?

Stick to refined sugar, if you like. As long as you ingest fewer calories than you burn, you'll lose weight whether you eat refined sugar, bran, or anything else. That's physics.

Of course, if you eat only refined sugar you'll get scurvy. But hey! You'll still lose weight. And teeth. And vital signs, eventually.

                • What? You mean that people should pay attention to what they eat, and not just count calories? (than again, dying is a great way to lose weight!)

                  • Absolutely. And that's in no way inconsistent with the fact that if you want to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you ingest. Because that remains an immutable fact whether you want to remain healthy or not.

Laws of Physics are inflexible like that, you see.

                    • You can lose weight eating nothing but twinkies (and vitamin pills to avoid dying of scurvy). http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08...iet.professor/

Actually, there are some major benefits to a snack food diet: It's really easy to count calories on packaged food.

That guy kinda cheated a bit because he apparently occasionally ate vegetables too, but the point remains.

                        • It's an infrastructure thing. It's a bit more difficult to organise the act of building a massive rocket than it is to organise the act of eating fewer pies. Plus budget plays a part too.

                          • Yeah, and nobody is arguing that there is any other way to lose weight than burning more calories than you ingest, it's just that it's pretty pointless reductionism to say that that's that and nothing else is important.
