If people are legitimately looking for work for long periods and unable to find it, I have no problem with benefits lasting as long as they need. That has to be accompanied by strict controls however to make sure people are genuinely continuing to seek work, and to help work through whatever problems are keeping them from finding it.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Unemployment benefits are very strong disincentive to working. Every human being on earth has a tendency to procrastinate until the moment of need. I know I have a tendency to wait until deadlines. People may not be intending to exploit the system and end up doing it anyway. I'm not saying unemployment benefits should go--just that extending them may actually be extending harm.If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

We could use cattle prods to make sure people don't slack off. As a side benefit, think of all the jobs this would create, as each person on unemployment would need to have someone follow them around with a cattle prod. Soon there would be no unemployed people at all!

EDIT: Alright, I'll elaborate. You pay more taxes when you make more money. Raising taxes is therefore a disincentive to work, not an incentive. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
