  • Crimea was not a humanitarian intervention. It was clearly a land grab for strategic reasons. Crimea has a strategic port.

NATO followed international law as far as Kosovo. It was an internationally backed intervention too.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

    • Depends who you want to believe.
The first decree of the new Ukrainian gov. was to ban all languages not ukranian and incoprorate nazi fractions to its governent.
Russian natives had legitimate reason to be concerned.

Kosovo was also a strategic move aimed to topple the last socialist government and divide and conquer Yugoslavia.

None were legitimate according to international law which specifically requires UN security council approval for any kind of international intervention.

In Kosovo it was missing. And, it was not international.

      • Fact is and remains that the NATO intervention was only the last step after years of international communicatrion with the serb government in order to mediate between the government and the kosovarians (and stop atrocities against the kosovarian population).

Nothing of this ever happened in Crimea or eastern ukraine.
Instead there was an immediate military intervention by disguised russian military in order to seize all important buildings in crimea, followed by a hastily organized referendum to get crimea away from Ukraine (a referendum whose results even are doubted in russia itself )

Also no attempts at mediating between eastern ukrainian "rebels" and the government, instead just plain weapons deliveries from the first minute on ... as well as sending in FSB agents.

Meanwhile US/UK were training arming and advising UCK albanian liberation army on how to wreck havoc in serbian and not only territory.
the role of the german precipitated ill conceived recognision of the croatian entity, without any prior negotiations, which it now completely financially dominates should also be put into scrutiny.

          Why wait?

Also there was no ethnic cleansing effectuated prior to the referendum as the one done under NATO in Kosovo prior to the referendum.

That actually increases the crimean legitimacy in comparison.

          • There was no ethnic cleansing in crimea, exactly.
Which is why there was no legitimate reason at all to militarily enforce a referendum in crimea.
A referendum which btw. was illegal under ukrianian costitution

            • The kosovar one was also illegal under Yugoslavian constitution and was conducted after NATO ensured a complete ethnic cleansing.

Not buying it. There was no reason to invade Crimea other than strategic reasons. As said, there was no ethnic cleansing occurring in Crimea.

Kosovo was seeing significant losses of life that made it an obligation by the west to intervene. This was in their own backyard and such atrocities could not be permitted. The intervention in Kosovo was internationally backed and within legal framework.
