but many jobs have a career ladder (with better pay and/or more leisure time at the higher positions)

On the other hand I would say that capitalism in its purest form is a bad idea as well.
Better are mixed forms, like the social market economy we have in germany
Depends on the job? Errrrrr... Not really. You just got to either do the following:

    1) Know someone in upper management and brownnose them.

    2) Sleep with someone in upper management

    3) Be related to someone in upper management

That is how it is generally in the private sector in the US. Maybe such nepotism is illegal in other countries, but not here.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

The worst is when it's all three.

That would be really questionable ethically, but hey some will do whatever they can for money lol.

          Surely isn't unknown in germany.
Also known as "Vitamin B" (With B = Beziehungen (i.e. relations))

On the other hand I think that it is more of a cancer in the upper management of large/megacorporations than the majority smaller companies.

In one medium-sized company I worked at, for example, even one of the 2 CEOs wasn't selected via Vitamin B, but rather the traditional way (i.e. via selecting among applicants) ... and his successor was one of the engineers of the company and also rather was selected because of his performance and less because of Vitamin B.

          • I love how our resident Putinbot claims the "legitimate" Afghan government invited the Soviets in when the Soviets sponsored a communist coup then had the coup puppets invite them in. That was a real coup too not the imaginary coup in the Ukraine where the people rose up to depose a highly corrupt president who was stealing everything not nailed down.

In my experience it's most common in situations where an individual has a strong say in promotion decisions. Size of the company is largely irrelevant. I've seen massive amounts of patronage in the promotion process at all levels - people clearly not suitable for a role getting the position because they play the game and others who are clearly the best choice but don't get anywhere because they don't play the game. But I would agree with you that it's truer the higher up you go, where the competition is fiercer and everything is political machination.

              • The individual has a strong say in promotion decisions? Uhhh... probably not. People get promotions because they kiss ass 90% of the time, not because of their merit. That's how capitalism works.

                • I take it you are upset because you work a low level job? You may want to actually try exceeding job expectations and see if that earns you a promotion. It worked for me and I know I am not the only one.

Not the individual after progression, an individual who makes the decision. It's easier to sweet talk one person of strong influence than a group of people with pooled influence. The opposite is also true - one important decision maker who doesn't like you can make progression tough.

                    • And I consider companies with that poor culture to be feudalistic in nature, not capitalist.

That is the problem in many companies. If one person above you doesn't like you, game over.

BTW, as far as the other trolling remark directed at my own background. I have gone into why nepotism is mitigated in the field I work in. It was maybe a problem two decades ago, but not anymore with uniformed changes. This isn't the case in the private sector. I don't work a low level job.

You should try reading and not making everything personal. I never said anything about me, but to deny that nepotism is rife in the private sector is foolish. Exceeding job expectations?

I see some are experts at exceeding that in trolling others on the internet. If some earned a salary at that, they would be earning well pass six figures.

BTW, you couldn't help it. I do very well at my job and have shown fine leadership skills. In my field, we are judged by merit, but that isn't the nepotistic private sector. Gotta start banging the boss in some of those companies.

                          • Your claim that doing a great job doesn't ever pay off and only ass kissing mattered seemed rather angry to me and practically begged the question. If it wasn't true then you could have just said no though that would have undermined your claim.

Either way, my point is now aptly made.

Never said that. You failed. Again.

Nepotism is common though. Look, you don't read and you don't address the points. You are lying too. Your point? Nonsensical once again! And then you proceeded to personally attack my own personal economic wellbeing.

                              Piss off.
