  • I want a Christmas pie.

On Christmas Eve, many French-Canadians will gather after midnight Mass for reveillon, a lavish dinner party that lasts into the wee hours. The traditional centerpiece is a savory, spiced meat pie.

    That is all.

The Japanese are rather crazy for Christmas spounge cake. It is not because they have coverted to Christianty in mass, less than 1% of the Japanese population is Christian, it was higher in the 1600's before the Japanese government ordered all Christians executed for being foreign agents, but because in post war Japan Christmas became a sing of western properity and modernization while Japanese retailers learned to love the idea of a big Christmas gift buying season. Capitalizism wins all just like how Islamic countries like Turkey have huge Christmas displays because Turkish retailers have learned they can make money off of a gift giving season.

The Japanese Christmas cake takes its name from the Christian holiday, but it actually symbolizes building a life of prosperity from nothing. And it's ubiquitous (it's even in your smartphone).
