In the case of pot, why would productivity drop? People don't generally go to work drunk, so why would they go to work stoned? Also, what are the increased healthcare costs associated with pot?

People go to work drunk and they go to work stoned. Generally? No, but too often. Alcohol and pot affect your mental and physical strength long after consumption. For example, the effects of alcohol consumption last up to a week.

Smoking marijuana as a youth causes permanent decrease in mental ability. Marijuana use causes increased chance of heart attack due to increases heart rate, and marijuana users miss more days from work due to lung illness.

            • Yeah, i have a problem with the doomed to failure argument. There are so many that have succeeded, (myself included).
I think it's more the person and not the activity. Which can be said about almost everything. Especially alcohol.

No one said anyone was doomed to failure. I said some will have diminished mental ability.

                • And that isn't a cost to society. Just to the person, and there are many things a person can do that will result in diminished mental activity that aren't illegal. Like studying or exercising their brain.
I don't think you can legislate that and shouldn't

Of course it's a cost to society.

                          • A lot of people could be doctors but choose not to be. What's your point?

And there are quite a few Businessmen that contribute more to society then doctors.

Lets say he's twelve and has a dream to be a doctor. Then he smokes pot and decides that's too hard. That is clearly a social cost.

                              • The same thing can happen if he doesn't smoke pot. What's you point.

Or the person that smoke pot may decide that he wants to be a doctor and is willing to do all the hard work.

I still don't see any direct correlation and you certainly haven't provided any proof. Just "Let's say"s
