It couldn't be the fact that Labor itself is ideologically opposed to immigration? I've always been curious how liberals argue that immigration is a good thing and that free labor movement is a good thing and labor being opposed to both. Apparently they lie to themselves about the dissonance.

And there are a number of Democrats in the US who are more conservative on social policy, including immigration (even Obama's plan involves "strengthening border security" as a main plank).
