2) lots of people have been dying in that region for years; the death tolls in the syrian civil war for example is approaching 200,000. if we want people to stop dying, the underlying issues which allow space for groups like ISIS need to be resolved.

C0ckney, I think it's significant that ISIS is not the Taliban--they're much more brutal and stupid by all appearances. Like the attempted hostage deal: stand back and let us kill tons of innocent people, or we'll kill this one innocent person! In all fairness, hostage-farming worked fine for the AQ types; even they don't seem to get that they're playing a different game.

Also, Iraq is not Afghanistan. Most of it is highly accessible flatland, and it has a long history, in living memory, of being a modern, semi-prosperous country. I expect most Iraqis want more out of life than rote obedience to tribal elders or archaically-minded imams. If ISIS can't deliver a solid set of victories over the Shiites, how long will the Sunnis of Iraq tolerate such a dismal life?

At any rate, what I've read is that it's almost entirely US Army Special Forces and the Marines are mostly there to protect the embassies, but jacking off over which branch was involved wasn't exactly the point. And it's not as if any of us can pretend to know for sure what the military special forces are doing.
