    • If workers hold shares in a privately held company, does that count as "workers owning the means of production", or is it discounted because the workers own it as individuals and not as a collective?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

      • That depends on whether the worker is an upwardly mobile fellow who works out constantly and plans on opening his own drinks & snacks kiosk or if he's a pot-smoking socialist loser munching on drinks and snacks in front of the TV.

i think in such a case they act in two capacities, firstly as a worker and secondly as a shareholder. to me, the workers owning the means of production means that they own it, exclusively and wholly, because of working there. so the factory is owned by the factor workers, the restaurant is owned by its workers etc.

in a situation such as you describe, the workers own a tiny part (or more than a tiny part, it doesn't really matter) in combination with capitalists. their ownership of (a small part of) the company is incidental to their working there.

          • So my support of employee owned companies doesn't make me a socialist. Good to know.

It makes you more capitalist. Employees owning shares in the company they work for is poor diversification (lose your job and your savings if it fails!) and a great incentive to make employees work harder for a lesser return on investment than a non-employed shareholder - so the non-employed shareholder is the one who benefits.

                • I did say privately held company. Most owners of privately held companies hold management positions, i.e., they are also in danger of losing their jobs and savings.

Tax-wise you'll pay less, much less, by shifting as much of your compensation to stock options.

You obviously have me confused with someone else.

I am not on the dole. I'm still contributing to the GOV for those that are. I did not vote for OBAMA.
Expect for common government services, I get NO handout from the GOV.

Maybe in a few years when I retire. But by then I'll have earned and paid multiple times over any handout that I might get back.

But yes, as I get older and think about health care, I'm more open to Government solutions.

I've always been a more moderate conservative.

They are poor capitalists. THey are working for a living.

Unless they use their position to justify boozie lunches and golf-days with clients, etc... and do no real work.

How much of a tax saving did Enron employees make?
