Recommend a good, problem-free laptop

For the past few years, I've owned an Asus G73jh. While it still holds up pretty well performance-wise, it is, frankly, a shoddily-made Chinese POS. My problems include:

1) Already had to get it fixed for what is called a psychedelic screen of death (PSOD) where the screen breaks.
2) It overheats after about 20 minutes of playing even early 2000's games and shuts down even with proper ventilation unless accompanied by an external cooling pad.
3) Perhaps related to overheating, it sometimes makes a bizarre and incredibly loud crackling noise, requiring it to be unplugged.
4) The battery, whose life even brand new is measured in minutes, stopped charging about two years ago even though I rarely used battery power. The battery is completely dead and doesn't charge.
5) The chiclet keyboard is crappy and letters have already fallen off.

If used with a cooling pad, it is fine but it also is a heavy and bulky beast that I have no interest in bringing with me on a deployment. The biggest issue for me is reliability. Is there a laptop that won't give me the problems that the Asus has given me?

they have a number of different makes and they specialise in gaming laptops. it's over 2 years old and i haven't had any serious problems with it, even in the heat of rio de janeiro.

Most of them are all made the same one or two companies, just rebranded with different window dressing.

Lenovos are solid.
Apple laptops are overpriced and run an annoying OS but they do have solid quality control.
If you are willing to spend ****loads of money on something with short battery life but tons of power you could get one from Falcon Northwest.
The big manufacturers like Dell and HP are decent enough, but you'd be advised to get the business models since they tend to be less fragile.

Don't shop from them if you need a laptop in a hurry though - all of the laptops I've gotten from them have been delayed for at least two weeks while they get parts

I'm not an Apple fanboy, but I can tell you I've had a Macbook pro for 4 years and it's my favorite computer ever.

All of the computers I've gotten recently have been Asus's (except my work computer, which is a Macbook, but I didn't have any choice in the matter on that one); currently I've got a 17" Asus as my primary computer, a 10" Asus netbook as my backup / travel computer, and a Macbook for my work computer. I've never had any problems with the Asus computers (the primary computer is 2.5 years old, the backup is around 4 or 5 years old now); the Macbook is a bit of a disappointment because of its lack of RAM and upgradability (I've got 8GB of RAM and I often exceed this into virtual memory, and I can't upgrade this because the RAM is soldered in; if the computer had 12 or 16GB then I'd be MUCH happier with it)

I've had bad luck with HPs because they put in too much useless ****; for example, my parents currently have an HP and none of the function keys work correctly because HP has hijacked them to do things like change the screen brightness

I haven't had a Dell in awhile, but was happy with my last one

Get Windows 7 instead of Windows 8, nobody I've talked to has been happy with Windows 8 (the computer I just ordered has Win7)
Edit: My brother is happy with Windows 8, but his computer has a touch screen and that probably has everything to do with it

For the price of a good laptop you could get a good desktop and a good tablet.

Tablets >> Laptops. You can get a laptop here for around 200 bucks. Good one will be about 500. Apples will be about 1200.
