BAGHDAD — Sunni militants spilling over the border from Syria seized control Tuesday of the northern city of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest, in the most stunning success yet in a rapidly widening insurgency that threatens to drag the region into war.

Among others Thank you Obama, indeed.

Naturally, noone could have seen that coming, could they?

In order to solve the crisis, we need to send George Bush jr there as a peace envoy, he has nothing to do anyway. He can bring Bliar with him, add Berlusconi for trio fantastico effect.

Apparently Carter's foreign policy was a disaster of near Obama proportions.

I'll be honest. I thought this was going to be about Eric Cantor, which is something I am still coming to terms with.

This has been going on for some time, you guys need to keep up. It's surprising that the Kurds aren't jumping in to this fight, much of the Mosul area is their zone.

Why? He appears to have lacked the sense of Lindsey Graham of all people to take his primary challenger seriously until it was too late to do anything about it.

yeah they (the ISIS) seized falluja at the end of last year.

the government has apparently been begging the kurds to get involved for some time; they've so far said 'no thanks'. perhaps they see a weaker iraqi state as in their interests, perhaps it's a bargaining tool (we'll help crush ISIS if you give us kirkuk), perhaps they don't see fighting as in their interests, or perhaps they don't feel capable of dislodging ISIS.

the ISIS is one of the rebel groups in syria. almost all of those calling for western intervention in syria wanted to support the rebels (although presumably not those rebels).

in the medium term, all this is likely to mean that the iraqi government, made up largely of opponents of the former ba'athist regime, will offer material and political support to the syrian ba'athist regime. i'm sure the irony won't be lost on them...
