Back then I don't think there was that much difference. It was a different time. Strom just got so senile that he didn't realize that things had changed.

Wasn't he like in his 90's and died in office? That's a sad indictment of the US political system that so many senators get in and literally don't leave until they die. I've been watching Boardwalk Empire from Netflicks. Where I'm at Nucky Thompson, the gangster leader of Atlantic City just got some Senators he bribed to arrange for a highway to Atlantic City to be constructed on land he previously purchased. Strom Thurman cut out the middle man because he was the Senator. He arranged for some of the Interstate Highways to run through his land. He made a fortune.
