go there and say nice doggie and try to pat it on the head?
ignore it? ( - i've tried that and it didn't work)

would you generally say that giving it food is a good idea? or would it expect it from you everytime it sees you and get pissed off if you don't bring some every time?
(this is serious real life question, so if someone who has dogs knows the answer i'd apprieciate it)
If the owner is comfortable with you making friends -some are not- and the time is worth it, sit down a for while nearby every day and let it get used to you, gradually getting closer.

I once worked on a ranch with what was reputed/alleged to be the meanest dog in the world; I was able to walk inside the range of Reddog's (his actual name) chain in three days without getting attacked, which the owner told me was amazing and unprecedented. Just keep chilled and don't let it be a measuring contest. Accept the initial barking with total calm - dogs can smell irritation and read people pretty well visually, too. Once I made friends with Reddog, I could walk right up and pet my new buddy. Few could.

This may result in the dog barking at you because it likes you, incidentally, even if it works...

I find out barking dogs to be just as effective.

My experience is opposite, and I can bark.

              Hahaha.

You're developing a subtle sense of humour there.

Pity it has nothing to do with reality.

You keep telling us about your shared Lithuanian/Arab heritage.

Remind us of how kind Arabs have been recently to Jews, and the role Lithuania played in the Holocaust.

Didn't you have a relative who served in the Nazi German armed forces too ?

Nope, not seeing any grounds for any inherited anti-semitism there.

I'm just happy I am not the only one to notice the racism common to certain domestic animals.
