  • Thread about racist NBA team owners

Sava posted that he doesn't want to talk about this, so I started a thread.

Delivering breaking stories and eye-popping videos. Plus all the off-field activities of the biggest athletes and personalities inside the sports world.

The news is not that rich white guys with huge egos might be racist douches, but that one has now been captured on tape with a fairly lengthy rant. The fact that he owns an NBA team makes it juicier, as it casts the whole master/slave thing in rather sharp relief. He also has a history of other incidents, both inside and outside of sports.

Almost lost in the shuffle here is the fact that Donald Sterling's rant is to his multiracial girlfriend/mistress, V. Stiviano. (Sterling is married. In fact, his wife Rochelle is suing Stiviano for return of all the cash and gifts her cheating husband has provided. She may be separated, but Rochelle still loves her community property!)

That's pretty amusing because the NBA is something like 90% black. Saying the athletes are in a master/slave relationship is uh, not appropriate though; the athletes have a pretty sweet deal even if they have a ****ty boss.

Also almost lost in the shuffle:

Sterling was supposed to get his second(!!!) Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAACP.

What I was trying to imply is that Donald Sterling treats his employees (and, apparently, his wives and mistresses) like slaves, not that they *are* slaves.

          I know, right?

But the NAACP has reconsidered, per Meet The Press this morning.

WASHINGTON -- The NAACP's Los Angeles chapter has apparently reconsidered plans to give Don Sterling an award in the wake of the Clippers owner's racist rant.

"He is not receiving a lifetime achievement award from the NAACP," Lorraine Miller, NAACP interim vice president, said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Why would someone get more than one lifetime achievement award? They didn't have, uh, two lifetimes did they?

Not all of them. Lost in the big salary numbers of the starting elite are the large numbers of players who have brief careers on the bench or toil in the D-Leagues:

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, there are three basic levels of D-League player salaries: $25,000, $19,000, and $13,000.
I wouldn't call constant training, practice, travelling, and the risk of injury a sweet deal for $13K/yr. Many of these guys toil in the D-Leagues for years and then are abruptly kicked to the curb when they suffer a career ending injury or get too old (like hit 30).

Since 99.9% of the D-league players aren't going to make it to the NBA, It's their fault they get paid 13-25K a year.

                    ACK!

Also, we're talking about someone who owns an NBA franchise. I don't know if he also owns a D-league franchise. Point is, if you're playing major league sports you generally get paid a lot of money. Players who spend their one and only season on the bench, less so, but it's not slave labor.

You know, for an NBA owner, I thought this mother****er would have better looking hookers girlfriends.

The NAACP did a lot of really great things 40 years ago. But I don't have a lot of nice things to say about their current state.
