Doing that for a living killed a lot of my pleasure in things renaissance/medieval, alas, for a long time. -Also, I can't stand to look at Hootie and the Blowfish because the drummer looks exactly like the worst director I ever worked with.

I could tell a lot of the stories of the sort Bugsy dreads - just imagine living (outdoors) among people who combine all the worst features of show people, hippies and nerds. I loved the job, but I hated the life and the people.

Some of them. Very energetic, vociferous, backstabbers, some of those.

I had plenty of friends - but remember how when you were in the service, you depended on the guys you worked with to have your back? This was not the crowd you could ever expect that from. Not close friends.

I think so. I was good at it.

Miguel of "Don Juan and" fame? A prince. He was really good to me, and I have no complaints. Cliff Hanger/Tree Man? I was an assistant the second day he took that out.

It's weird; I worked with people who know Penn & Teller, Harry Anderson and Jon Lovitz, all of whom got their start in fairs. The show was just a dirty outdoor theme park, but it was vaudeville, too; I had a chance to be out there being bad at it and learn to get really good. And some people go from that onto much classier sorts of venues.

If I was temperamentally suited to act as my own agent and Dad hadn't gone stupid on us, I might be out there still plugging away - or a star, maybe. I could make the people laugh like I was Ben bragging about what a winner I was. Or cry, depending on what I was doing. I made mad cash at shows where I had hat privileges, and pulling more each show with no end of the curve in sight when I dropped out. [shrugs]

I think it's fantastic. Apparently it used to be pretty bad, but a professional management company came in some years ago and polished everything up.

I would probably sit around wathing the black smith's stand and trying to learn how to do that trade just because I found it interesting. Sad, huh?

If someone was teaching fencing I might try that though I probably wouldn't be any good. Other than that I'd hang out at the place selling home made mead and roasted turkeys. I have to say the turkeys aren't very authentic but they do taste good.

I've actually been wondering, mainly because of a webcomic I've reading -- just how bad a word is carney, anyway?

It's a matter of opinion - carneys sometimes pride themselves on how crooked their games can be and get away with it; a carney told me so. Renfair people tend to look down their noses at them, not that it comes up often, there being not a lot of similarity. Renfairs don't tend towards games with any prizes, after all. I can't think of any, at least, and I saw a lot of games in eight years of doing it.

Carney is a term carneys use themselves - I've no idea if it's okay for you or I to say it.
