Is it time to allow at least some soldiers to be armed on post? I realize though that allowing them all to be armed is a logistical nightmare.

It's not clear to me that he suffered his mental health issues after entering the military. Better screening?

Unless I've missed a story, they haven't pinned down a motive yet but sure. We should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. The only real point that I was making is that if more military personnel were armed on base (instead of declaring them to be gun free zones) the guy's rampage might have been stopped sooner.

From what I've read, this is a PTSD case.

Also, if you are legitimately concerned about "gun free" zones, you need your head examined.

Honestly. How can a sane, intelligent person learn about this incident and immediately come to that conclusion?

                Please answer this question.

                        nbc story:
[the shooter] was clearly troubled, under treatment for depression and anxiety and being evaluated for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Nutbars of all stripes tend to target areas where they know that people will be unarmed. They tend to commit suicide when confronted. See Virginia Tech, both attacks at Ft Hood, Columbine and Sandy Hook. What's the point of attacking someone who is armed and then getting killed? You've accomplished nothing. So if your target is to kill people - you go to where you'll have the tactical advantages of surprise and a readied weapon, and a high profile place, likely with many people you can kill. You want a place where you can be certain that your targets will be there at a time of your choosing.

The one thing all of these shootings have in common is that they occurred in public areas considered to be soft targets in that they had a no guns policy.

Just shifting that to a 'concealed carry permitted' will make you no longer a 'soft target', and nutbars will go after a softer target next time. You don't have to be armed to the teeth, you just have to appear less vulnerable than your neighbour.
