Either junk that ancient beast or just install a different operating system (again, linux would work well even on really old computers).

To use it for software that runs fine on XP and doesn't on newer OS's, like games. Duh?

Only games I can't get to run on Win7 and onwards, are old 16bit games. Those can be run in a virtual machine if needed, no need to keep the old trainwreck that is XP.

Is Direct2D supported in .net the way GDI+ is (through System.Drawing)?

Not sure how it integrates with .NET. We use it via C++.

Win 8 is just pointless on the desktop.

No positives for majority of desktop users and the main difference is being faced with an interface that you need to disable. Even if the annoyance is slight, why would you want to spend the money on that?

so do I struggle onward with xp until the crap crashes me into upgrading to win 7 or 8?

I'm ignorant about the tech stuff so switching to linux or something else is probably beyond my means

does win 8 handle civ games okay?

This thread is Exhibit A of why we shouldn't let libertarians (like Berz) run ****.

People who are ignorant with respect to tech issues shouldn't be allowed to run ****? What fraction of the modern leaders whom you respect do you really think even know what windows 8 is let alone attempt to solicit opinions about the relative virtues of various available OSs? Do you really think most of them are even a tiny smidgen of tech savvy?

If any potential world leader is still running Windows XP, impeach their ass

In principle ( ) it should be as easy to install as any flavour of windows, and for regular use (internet/media/some gaming) it is a very similar experience. Probably the same amount of fuss (or less) than learning where are things on the ribbon, ie going from MS Office 2003 to 2007...
