I don't understand the appeal of Bitcoin.

Bitcoin was meant for buying **** on the Silk Road. But since the feds compromised that, Bitcoins are now useless.

The fact he's a liberal makes this question boring, not fascinating.

Really? I've been informed that liberals are tolerant, open-minded, etc. Are you saying that they are as fusty as social conservatives?

If it were more stable it would be great for remittances. Much cheaper than banks for poorer people.

There is appeal there for legit uses.

Uhh. No. Just plain no. I don't understand this opposition to using banks. Do you like paying extortionate fees for everything?

Ripple Labs is the solution for this. Not Bitcoin.

Yes and No. Depends on the bank and the method.

Sending money with Wells Fargo costs about 3-10x some other methods up-front and often requires an exchange rate where they can take ~2 full points. (Compared with 2 tenths being standard on the exchange rates here.) It can get really messy when sending money to a USD account in PH, since they require an exchange to PHP before sending the money to PH via their remittance method. (A plain wire transfer is more expensive up-front, but doesn't require the exchange.) I lucked out the one time this bit me, and the bank here forwarded the transfer to my PHP account without even needing prompting. The alternative was BPI exchanging to USD and taking their cut, then getting it again when I exchange back to PHP.) Wells Fargo BPI

Writing a check to deposit is free, except I can't get the money for a month. At local loan rates that would be ~3%, but if I don't have a pressing need for the money (and enough reserve for emergencies) it's the preferred method.

On the other hand I don't know if there's even a viable method to exchange Bitcoins for PHP in PH. If there is, I'd be willing to bet the exchange rate sucks and it's a hassle.

I often resort to Xoom to send USD over, then exchange at the local bank. It works out to about .5% on transfer and .2% on exchange.

Paypal is the worst method. They force the exchange, have terrible rates, and it works out to around 5% to send money.
