Non-aggression pact >< military alliance. Poland, France and Brits have signed the same non-aggression pacts with Hitler way earlier. USSR was the last country in Europe who signed such pact with Germany, 'cause French and Brits constantly refused to form an alliance vs. Hitler with USSR. And that was obvious for the Soviet leadership why - cause they wanted war between Germany and SU, not the war of UK+France+USSR vs. Germany.

Soviets waited a couple of weeks and after their surprise and shock that Polish forces were utterly crushed within just two weeks and Polish western allies do nothing instead of fighting the nazis on the western front, Soviets decided to took lands their enemy Poland have stolen from USSR two decades ago to prevent those lands falling to the nazi's hands.
