$1mill for unanticipated needs. That's a lot of hookers and blow.

$50k for gifts to foreign leaders seems rather ****ty to be honest. Maybe some of those "unanticipated needs" go to buy iPods that weren't budgetted for.

Yep, and the Queen on the civil list was only 50 million. Is it treasonous to argue that America would be better off with her?

The 700 mill is the bill for everything they protect, not just the president. It became a point of prestige to have a protective detail during the 90s. You wouldn't believe how many people get secret service protection nowadays. Congress really bloated the operation and thus the budget.

How many agents can you hire for $ 700 million? I'd guess in excess of 10,000. We've got only so many cabinet members, federal judges and legislators. Do they protect state level officials also?

Out of curiosity where are you getting this idea that its the "stuff they protect?" That doesn't even make any sense.

The POTUS transports a small army around these days. Besides airforce one and the HX helicopters you are used to seeing they now have a few MV-22s dedicated to him as well. They transport around two dozen vehicles wherever they go (including the two limos, necessary in my opinion).

Like anything government if you let it grow it does. They do an important job, how could you not want them to do it BETTER! I do wonder what you can protect against with 5000 hangers on instead of 1000, at some point anything less than an armored division isn't going to be a threat (I am talking about all his staff, not just SS).

The Federal Marshals protect most of our officials, and really should protect the President too; the fact that the secret service does is dumb. To answer your question about the budget though, the reason is because the Secret Service's main job is tracking down counterfeiters.

The Ospreys, Air Force One, HX helicopters and so on fall under the air force and marine corps budget.

Yes, but the OP specifically pulled those line items out to get a full cost of presidential security services.
