From elsewhere on the internet:Originally posted by onodera View PostThe menus are hilarious. They wanted to write "a selection of X", which is literally written as "X in assortment" in Russian and is shortened to "X in ass." in every menu. Google Translate failed to understand what ass was.
Have you seen "language in the test" as well?
BoC: Excuse me, waiter, I'll have an Arnold Palmer.
Waiter: We don't have that, sir.
BoC: Hmm...
[looks at menu]
Alright, make it an Arnold Fister.

So not Nicholas II's detested German wife, Princess Alix of Hesse ? And his incapacity to rule ? And Russia's humiliating defeat in the Russo-Japanese War ? What about Plehve's hostility to Witte and Witte's subsequent forced resignation ? Etc....Originally posted by Serb View PostGermans were ok. What destroyed Romanovs were Brits and their "Grandma Victoria" with her precious gift of hemophilia.
Nicolas II and George V were twins. Well, cousins actually.

It's difficult for some Russians to be proud of Catherine the Great. After all, she started out as a minor German noblewoman.Originally posted by Elok View PostI was putting words in the mouth of Peter the Great. My point is, there have been two Russian monarchs called "the Great," both of whom more or less openly despised Russian society, just like Western European society of the time and ever since. And you guys have been through a lot, so we should cut you some slack. C'mon, I'm trying to be sympathetic here, you dumb Slavic bastard.

Stillm, her armies did get to kill a lot of Muslims, and annex big chunks of Poland.Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.

Why do you think so? All European monarchs were relatives more or less. It's absolutely normal. I haven't seen a single Russian who is not proud of Catherine because of her been a German Princess.Originally posted by molly bloom View PostIt's difficult for some Russians to be proud of Catherine the Great. On what grounds? I mean, Putin is a thug, but the Chinese are surely at least as bad. Sochi is inappropriate climate-wise, but Beijing doesn't even have decent air to breathe. If they bussed the athletes to a place with real air to compete, then Sochi and Beijing are a draw. It still seems silly to hold a Russian Olympics in one of the few parts of the country that doesn't have snow in winter, but eh.Originally posted by Guynemer View PostDisagree.
