i think this is a common misconception. although what the communists did had an enormous human cost, the rapid industrialisation improved the russian people's lives a lot. if i recall correctly, less than 10% of people were employed in areas other than agriculture in the early 1920s. under stalin russia industrialised faster than germany had in 19th century.

The Soviet industrial growth in 1930's is just unprecedented.
Stalin: "We have a decade to do what other countries done in a century, otherwise they'll crush us".
And Soviets did that. And won the war.

The menus are hilarious. They wanted to write "a selection of X", which is literally written as "X in assortment" in Russian and is shortened to "X in ass." in every menu. Google Translate failed to understand what ass was.
