Oh, I've moved on from this (for now). My brothers and I were discussing our relationship histories the other day, and my eldest brother asked if my middle brother had ever seen the video in which I got together with my second girlfriend. He had not, so I explained the story...
About 10 years ago I met a girl online. We talked occasionally at first, and then more frequently, until almost every day we would come home (her from school, me from work) and talk online until 1 in the morning or so. Then came my birthday. My friends threw a surprise birthday party for me and gave me a bunch of obviously ****ty presents, like a half-eaten bag of Skittles wrapped in duct tape. All the while there was a giant, four-foot tall gift box sitting in the middle of the room. Eventually there's cake, and candles, and the singing of happy birthday. And then, at the end of the song, out of the box pops my (soon to be) second girlfriend. I was stunned beyond belief, which I know for a fact because one of my friends was taping the whole thing.
In fact, he'd been taping the entire day, as he and some other friends (including my high school gf) had driven up to Pennsylvania, picked up my second girlfriend, driven back down, and put together this whole party. The rest of the day got taped, too, along with the sad drive back to Pennsylvania the next day to drop second girlfriend back at home.
Anywho, said recorder of events eventually gave me a DVD he had produced of the whole thing. Because my brother mentioned it the other day, I went home and watched it. And then things got worse. You see, second girlfriend and I were together for 2 years, but most of our relationship was long-distance, online. Which means that a very large chunk of our relationship is recorded in text files. Which I've been reading. Constantly. For the past 2 days. Reading our first conversations, when we barely knew each other, reading the increasingly personal conversations as we got to know each other, reading the head over heels in love stuff after the birthday party, reading the discussions of how to see each other more frequently, reading the arguments about how I was spending too much time with EBF, reading the back and forth emails in which we contemplated ways of keeping our relationship afloat, reading the confession in which I told second girlfriend about all the horrible ways in which I had lied to her, reading the painful attempts at reconciliation, with second girlfriend still not willing to leave me, reading the aftermath when we finally ended things for good, reading my pathetic apologies years later for all that I had done, etc.
The interesting thing about a recorded relationship is that I can instantly find any moment in the relationship, replay it, and feel the same way I felt then. And I don't have to do it in chronological order. I can skip the boring parts, or contrast the heart-wrenching end with the joyful beginning, or find every instance in which we talked about EBF, or Star Wars, or sex, etc.
Man, this is not healthy. Therapist is going to have her work cut out for her next week.
Side note: A perfect encapsulation of how EBF contributed to the ruin of my second relationship is found in the aforementioned video. Apparently I was supposed to think that EBF was hiding in the box, but this part of the surprise didn't work. I had no idea what was in the box. So second girlfriend pops outs, comes over, gives me a hug, and we sit together holding each other. A few seconds later EBF walks in from around a corner, sits down next to me, and puts her arms around me, too. I carefully avoid touching her, concerned as I am only with second girlfriend at the moment. But all of the pictures taken from that moment are of me sitting between the two of them.
