In a lot of ways, people's views of "objective reality" is highly conditioned on what their feelings are on some matter - for example, thinking that it is objective reality that there is some conspiracy against men due to one's feelings of being screwed over by women in the past.I drank beer. I'm a boy. I did fantastically well in school.

I think the examples of men in the distant past who were allowed to show emotions were more restricted to that of nobility and upper classes and sometimes their "pets" ... who could get away with a lot due to birthright or position. Also, even in those cases it wasn't that men weren't expected to fill a certain role or be looked down upon ... it was just different roles. Imagine the poor brutish man in Arabic Cordoba who couldn't write poetry ... how they were shunned and scorned by high society ... why should we only care about the feelings of effeminate men?
The peasants who comprised most of the people likely were much more prone to being physically punished or outright killed if they were weak men. You can't really write much poetry if your father is going to whip you for not getting the fields plowed (especially when you're illiterate).
