I suppose there is, but honestly, it's not earth-shaking news to me. It's pretty clear, at this point, that gay marriage is going to wind up legal in every state. All this means is that it happened in an unexpected order, or perhaps a little earlier than expected.

What, no thread about how frickin' UTAH now has legal gay marriage?

Dude, based on the Argentinians I've met, I'm surprised you guys can tell the gay ones apart without actually seeing them do it. The "gay marriage" thing may just be a ruse to make it possible to identify them publicly.

If it had been a voter initiative, yes it would have been more interesting. As it is a judicial imposition, who cares what state it was in?Originally posted by Boris Godunov View PostCome on, there's a pretty big difference between it happening in places like Maine, Rhode Island, California and Utah.
I'm somewhat surprised no one brought this up. Especially with DM making the sad desperate attempt at a polygamy joke. Or would this invite too many slippery slope comparisons?I make no bones about my moral support for [terrorist] organizations. - chegitz guevara

We've had the whole polygamy argument here several times before. I don't see anything morally objectionable about polygamy in and of itself. The legal problem is that marriage in the U.S. is a two-person system by design. There are no mechanisms for incorporating more persons into the legal arrangement. There's a whole mess of laws, rights and benefits that rely on it being a two-person arrangement. Unlike same-sex marriages, which just involve changing some pronouns, polygamy is a fundamental sea change in how legally-recognized marriages would work. The logistics of it alone would be a nightmare.Tutto nel mondo è burla

Reynolds makes it very clear that it's one man and one woman in explicit rejection of other systems of law - since the US runs on top of English Common Law.We've had the whole polygamy argument here several times before. I don't see anything morally objectionable about polygamy in and of itself. The legal problem is that marriage in the U.S. is a two-person system by design.
I'm going to call bull**** on that. Reynolds explicitly lays it out why the definition is one man and one woman. There are no mechanisms for incorporating more persons into the legal arrangement.
As opposed to changing a number?Unlike same-sex marriages, which just involve changing some pronouns
You're arguing against polygamy because of logistics?, polygamy is a fundamental sea change in how legally-recognized marriages would work. The logistics of it alone would be a nightmare.
Good luck getting anyone to fight for your marriage law against polygamy, Boris. If it's just a contract, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to guarantee 30 other people if you so desired. After all, that's all marriage is, right? A legal piece of meaningless paper.
You're not a bigot - right? If I love more than one person, I should be able to get married to all of them. Why not?Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

So far the 'slippery slope' is batting 1.000. Newsflash, when you're deliberately educating kindergarden children about the sin of heteronormativity - something we were promised would not happen, we can only conclude that all the gay rights folks are liars.Or would this invite too many slippery slope comparisons?Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

Right, so we find out now that one Obama nominee justice can't overturn a state amendment barring gay marriage. Pity. No wonder Obama panicked and invoked the nuclear option so he can ram all his nominees through. They're only blocking further marriages while the state appeals the decision... I guess Ben is having a premature ejaculation.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.
