True. It is a lot of fun.

    Article on the matter:

Does it Really Matter if the Wii U Fails?
Things aren’t looking up for Nintendo’s console, but how much does that actually matter?
by Keza MacDonald JANUARY 17, 2014

This morning, Nintendo announced massive cuts in its year-end sales expectations for the 2013-2014 financial year. Right up until the end of October last year, it was projecting a 9m figure for Wii U sales between April 2013 and March 2014 - today that was slashed to 2.8 million. It’s a massive blow, and despite the 3DS being the best-selling console of 2013 in the UK, North America and Japan, it still somehow failed to meet its targets too. That projection was cut from 18 million to 13.5 million.

As a result of this, Nintendo expects to make an operating loss, as it did in 2013 and 2012 (although Nintendo still managed to claw back an overall profit in 2013 thanks to its investments and cash reserves).

It’s not good news. The Wii U is failing to break even and its sales aren’t picking up at anything like the rate necessary to change that.

    How has this happened?

Leaving the 3DS aside for a moment - I think we can all agree that despite the fact it failed to meet projections, the 3DS is doing brilliantly and there’s not much more that Nintendo could be doing to improve its performance - there are three main reasons behind the Wii U’s failure to launch so far, if you ask me. The first is branding: the name “Wii U” has been confusing since the start, and anecdotally, a large proportion of Wii owners still aren’t aware that it’s a new console at all. This confusion has resulted in a lack of awareness around the console that has meant it’s failed to hit the same market that the Wii dominated.

The second problem, which has also contributed to this lack of awareness, is marketing. Here in the UK I have seen barely any Wii U marketing anywhere since launch except on specialist games websites, and even there it’s barely registered.

The third problem, however, is outside Nintendo’s control: the end of 2013 saw the release of two new consoles that far outperform the Wii U in every aspect apart from its software lineup. Nintendo might not see the Xbox One and PS4 as competition, but the reality is that they are, and both of them sold more than the Wii U managed in a year in just a few months. Against that competition, the Wii U is going to have a very tough time regaining ground.

But here’s the thing: even if the Wii U never turns around, even if it ends up as a very expensive mistake, it’s a mistake that Nintendo can more than afford.

Wait… haven’t we seen this before?

I’ve gone into this at great length before, but bear with me: Nintendo is an extraordinarily solvent company. As of the end of the last financial year, Nintendo had around $5bn in cash assets and another $5bn in bonds. That’s $10bn essentially in the bank. Ten BILLION dollars. Which means that Nintendo could make a loss of the projected proportions for 20 or 30 years without running out of money.(Naturally if Nintendo actually did make a loss for 20 consecutive years then we really would have good cause for concern, but in principle, the company could afford it.)

Of Nintendo’s six major home consoles (NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii and Wii U), three were market leaders (NES, SNES and Wii - and in much of Europe, even the NES barely even registered next to ubiquitous home computers, even though it dominated in Japan and America). The other three were well behind their competitors in sales. The current pattern of dominance in the handheld market, too, is something we’ve seen before, in every iteration of the Game Boy and DS. As yet nobody has been able to challenge Nintendo in handheld gaming, and even with smartphones encroaching on that space, it still does well.

Any talk of Nintendo’s imminent collapse or exist from the console market, then, can be swiftly dismissed. Whatever happens now, whether the Wii U rallies or dies, whether we see a new console sooner than expected or not, Nintendo will not collapse.

    What’s to be done?

I’m honestly not sure what Nintendo can do to turn the Wii U around at this point. Even a wonderfully reviewed new Mario game didn’t make anything like the impact Nintendo was hoping for.

Nintendo fans are calling for a new Metroid, a new F-Zero, and other fan favourites, but the truth is that these are not games that will sell to the massmarket in the way that Nintendo needs. They sell to people like you and me - and though we’re a big market, we’re not the market that’s going to save Nintendo’s sales projections. Metroid Prime sold just over 100,000 in the UK in its lifetime according to Chart-Track, and it’s estimated at around 2 million worldwide. F-Zero GX on the GameCube sold under a million worldwide. They were fantastic games and new entries would be extremely welcome on Wii U, but these are not the games that sell millions of consoles. For that you need the FIFAs and Calls of Duty of the world.

Do you want FIFA and Call of Duty? Or do you want Smash Bros and Bayonetta 2? If the latter, there’s no reason to regret buying a Wii U. And that gets to the heart of why Nintendo fans shouldn’t be unduly worried about the Wii U’s poor performance.

I grew up in the era when Nintendo was the underdog home console (first with the N64, then with the Gamecube), and it didn’t matter. The games weren’t any worse. Gamecube owners, particularly, enjoyed a fantastic selection of left-field and memorable games. Even if the Wii U doesn’t turn around, those of us who’ve bought one will still get to play Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2 and a new Zelda on it within the next year or two. If the Wii U turns out to be a niche console with niche games, is that such a bad thing if the games themselves are worthwhile?

In July last year following Nintendo’s 2013 results, we saw Nintendo “in profit, ticking over and not in immediate danger, but faced with the increasingly real possibility of its first proper home-console flop - and with an operating loss of around $50m to try to correct”. Now, we see Nintendo not just facing the possibility, but the reality. Nintendo will be wanting the Wii U to break even, and that looks like the best case scenario in the short-term future. But even if it doesn’t happen, the Wii U still has a great year ahead in terms of games - and even if it turns out to be an expensive mistake for the company, it’s a mistake that it can afford, this time.

I love my Wii U. So many good games only available for it exclusively. I do think Nintendo is sweating now that it sells so poorly though. I bet they're hard working on a second console for this generation and that we'll see it within two years...

The main problem with the Wii U is that it wasn't quite enough more powerful than the xbox 360 (although it has far more RAM) and that it didn't have any good games on launch. If they'd launched with a Zelda title or a new Smash Bros it would be top dog right now.

Doubtful. Nintendo really doesn't have much to worry about that small a loss.

The WiiU didn't need to be more powerful because the graphics are still kind of kiddy. Nintendo figured out they could save money on the hardware and still produce games which casual gamers would like to play. That's their market segment and they hit the nail with the WiiU.

They didn't, actually, the Wii U is failing miserably in the stores. But the games are really fun, so I don't regret my decision. It's also a lot cheaper than the xbone or ps4.

Yeah, it's $100 cheaper with probably 20% of the usable lifespan (in terms of software support).

"lot cheaper" is a weird phrase for that.

The failing of Wii U is sad. I really don't understand what market is Nintendo targeting.

From what I've read, they seem to think to think that mom's buy console considering how cute and silent it is. This is nonsense! First, parents are buying console considering which one their children wants (and they usually wants the new "cool" console, with "cool" games and graphics). Second, if they target casual gamer (which I don't believe they exist), they don't buy a 300$ console. The have bought a Wii, but they will not buy a Wii U at 300$.

Casual gamer is a misleading choice of word. Many people who have bought a Wii are not "casual" gamer, they bought it for party and fitness (wii fit). I call them : “party gamer”

Right now, there two kinds of people who are buying a Wii U: (1) gamers who like Nintendo (they will have a PC or a PS4 or XBOX One) and (2) "Old gamers" which want to play video games with their GF or their sons, and they know that Nintendo. From my understanding, the first market is decreasing since the gamecube and the n64. And, I don't know much about the second market. Except, that I am a part of it! I want a Wii U. Why? I want to play with my GF. I want to be in the living room with her while she listens to the TV and I play games on the gamepad, by example. Ff I have a urge to play Battlefield, COD or Borderlands, I have a PC,.

Why I wait to buy a Wii U : the opportunity cost is high. Buying a Wii U will cost me more than 300$. I need one more controller (to play games with my GF), and I need games... Right now, I prefer to put 500$ on my house than on a console, since we play with the Wii of my sister.

From now, which kind of market they should go after? I don't know. But I think, they can go after only these two markets: gamers who like Nintendo (which is a market that doesn't seems to grow) and guys like me (older gamers). We have money, even if it's limited, and we want to play videogames with our GF or our children’s. If they ever want to go after the “party gamer”, they should drop the price of the Wii U at 200$, maximum, with a lot of marketing. This will cost them a lot of money.

In regards to the future, they will have no choice to go after the gamers market. Even if they don't want to, they will have no choice to compete with Sony and Microsoft. Because, they are competing against them, no matter what they think.

Lately, I grow bored of PC games (I think the Steam sales are in cause). I borrowed the Wii of my sisters during Christmas to play games with my GF. We played a lot of Wii Resort, Mario Kart and Super Mario. But in the evening I tried Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Paper and Metroid Prime 3. Wow! I forgot how good Nintendo (and Retro studio) are. I didn't even play Eve Online or any other PC games since.

.... oh, should I say it again? Yes! Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 are amazing games.

Smash Bros doesn't stop working. The usable lifespan is decades, if my n64 (which still gets played regularly) is any indication.

Their release calendar for 2014? It's as follows, maybe:
                          P

                          • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, February 21
                            P
                          • Mario Kart 8, date to be announced
                            P
                          • Bayonetta 2, date to be announced
                            P
                          • Yarn Yoshi, date to be announced
                            P
                          • Super Smash Bros. Wii U, date to be announced
                          • Hyrule Warriors, date to be announced
                          • X, date to be announced
                          • Fire Emblem X Shin Megami Tensei, date to be announced

Is that enough to turn the Wii U around? After all that other stuff didn't make a big impact? That's the question.
Nintendo's handheld gaming system, the 3DS, just had an incredible year of stellar game after stellar game...Fire Emblem Awakening to Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon to Animal Crossing: New Leaf to Mario & Luigi: Dream Team to Pokémon X & Y to The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, along with an ever-increasing number of smaller, quality download-only releases and some good outside support with the likes of Monster Hunter, Phoenix Wright and more. The 3DS also, according to Nintendo, is slumping in Europe.

Nintendo expected to sell 18 million 3DS systems this past year. Now they expect to sell 13.5 million. That, again, is after one of the strongest years of game releases the company has delivered for one of their platforms.

                          So.... time to panic?

If you're a gamer who loves Nintendo games, don't freak out. You're likely going to have a place to play Nintendo games somehow, some way, no matter what. In the worst of doomsday scenarios, Nintendo limps along, spends through its considerable warchest while making its own hardware that must be purchased to play its own games. It eventually abandons making hardware and makes games for other companies' hardware. It's a comedown, but, again, the gamer gets to keep playing Nintendo games.
The company has plenty of money and, arguably, plenty of time to try various strategies.

In rosier scenarios, Nintendo turns it around and succeeds with its own machines. Today it seems less clear than ever how Nintendo does that. Here are some theories. Feel free to choose which you think is best:
                          P

                          • Nintendo starts making games for smartphones, which maybe happens alongside them still making games for their own hardware. This is the move the company gets asked about all the time and repeatedly waves off since it would be seen as an abandoning of company philosophy that it can only make the best games if it has also made hardware it can tailor for those games. But maybe it still saves its best new games for its own machines.
                          • Nintendo replaces the Wii U with a more powerful console and does so soon in order to better compete with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4...The last company to start zipping through home console iterations really quickly was Sega.
                          • Nintendo sticks it out with the Wii U, strikes gold with the Mario Karts, Smash Bros. and some surprise game that has Nintendogs-like success, turning it all around.
                          • Nintendo looks to the future while letting the Wii U limp along, stumbles through this generation and prepares for a Wii-like comeback in 2017 or so.
                          • Nintendo combines its console and handheld lines, from here on out releasing machines that can be played portably or at home, maybe connected to a TV, maybe not, no longer splitting its formidable game development talent across two different machines and instead having all of its developers work together to make great games for its lone machine. (In case you can't tell, this is your author's pick).

                          What'll it be?
Let's end with something positive. Nintendo did some of its best work when people thought they were down for the count. People think they're down for the count now. Bring on your best work, Nintendo. It's time.

Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10

Nintendo stock seems like a good buy right now. I doubt Nintendo is going to die.

I have no love for Nintendo or the Wii U. My sister brought hers over before the holidays. I've not spent one minute by myself playing it.

But yeah, when Mario Kart and Smash Bros comes out, more people will get into it.

As far as consoles go, Nintendo is probably in the best spot. Most of their titles are exclusive. You simply can't replicate the Nintendo experience on PC.

But Xbone and PS4? Both of those consoles are basically sub par PC's. Most of the popular titles can be played on PC. The only people who have those machines as their primary means of gaming are 12 year olds who either don't know or don't have the means to game on a good PC.

Or they could just be idiot fanboiz like Asher.

I honestly don't understand brand love like that. I've had all sorts of hardware over the years. I've had most every console. There hasn't ever been a single company or product that has stood out above the rest to the point where I would pick up the flag and lead a battle against "haters". Such discussions usually devolve into this sort of tribal fight. It's stupid. I have no respect for fanboiz of any ilk.

Asher's love of Microsoft fills the void left in his heart by his lack of religion.
