The latest poll shows a majority of Americans still do.

              62% to be precise.

Most Americans are conspiracy theorists when it comes to John F. Kennedy.

A strong majority of Americans continue to believe that the former president's assassination wasn't the work of just one man, though the number believing one man was solely responsible is on the rise.

Over six in 10 Americans say the assassination was part of a broader plot rather than just Lee Harvey Oswald, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Another 29 percent blame one man alone -- the highest that number has been since the 1960s.

The Warren Commission in 1964 concluded that Oswald was solely responsible.

Another 62 percent also say there was an official cover-up to keep the public from learning the truth about the assassination. Indeed, majorities over the past four decades of polling have consistently sided with the prospect that more than one person was involved in the 35th president's assassination on Nov. 22, 1963.

              • I was watching a rebroadcast of local news on the 50th anniversary and this eyewitness said repeadedly that the shots came from behind him and his family, but the newsman kept mentioning the grassy knoll. If there's a conspiracy, I think it's the media planting the thought of a conspiracy.

                • That would explain why the poll shows that the majority of Americans believe in the conspiracy theory. But it doesn't explain why you think the poll says otherwise.

Or perhaps the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations concluding that he was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy?

                    • No, asshat. There was no commission on the day of the assassination.

                      • It was clearly well before the assassination occurred.

On the day of his assassination? What the hell are you talking about?

I'm talking about the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations which investigated the assassination between 76-78 and concluded that he was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy.

In particular, the various investigations performed by the U.S. government were faulted for insufficient consideration of the possibility of a conspiracy in each case. The Committee in its report also made recommendations for legislative and administrative improvements, including making some assassinations Federal crimes.

The Chief Counsel of the Committee later changed his views that the CIA was being cooperative and forthcoming with the investigation when he learned that the CIA's special liaison to the Committee researchers, George Joannides, was actually involved with some of the organizations that Lee Harvey Oswald was involved with in the months leading up to the assassination, including an anti-Castro group, the DRE, which was linked to the CIA, where the liaison, Joannides, worked in 1963. Chief Counsel Blakey later stated that Joannides, instead, should have been interviewed by the Committee, rather than serving as a gatekeeper to the CIA's evidence and files regarding the assassination. He further disregarded and suspected all the CIA's statements and representations to the Committee, accusing it of obstruction of justice.

You pointed to one thing you said you thought planted the seed. I pointed out that when part of your own government investigated and thought there was a conspiracy, it's hardly a surprise that most other people do too. Especially as the whole thing was so incredibly convenient, far fetched and was only one of a series of other equally convenient murders of public figures, including the completely farcical idea that RFK was killed by Sirhan Sirhan alone.

I've always been torn on what the **** happened with the JFK thing, it was almost certainly just Oswald doing the shooting, but the CIA were very clearly involved with him beforehand. I think it's almost impossible to deny that given his bizarre travel to Russia at the height of the cold war and the CIA associates that were surrounding his life before the shooting.
