  • ridiculously hasty assumption of the day

I just learned, while Wikisurfing, that children in foster care have a higher incidence of PTSD than soldiers due to the ridiculously high rate at which they are physically and/or sexually abused. And now you know it too!

Note that the nativity fast starts tomorrow, so I'll only get to read the first couple of thank-yous you write me.

Did they get the PTSD before entering foster care or afterwards?

I wonder what the incidence of PTSD is in the non-foster care, non-soldier population.

I think I misread it. The way Wiki phrased it, it sounded like a significant number of foster parents were beating the **** out of/molesting their kids. Seems it's more the horrible treatment they got at the homes they were removed from, and/or with the stress of leaving their families or getting shuffled around repeatedly. Hypothetical non-lazy mod, please change the thread title to "ridiculously hasty assumption of the day," kthx.

About 7-8% of the population will have PTSD at some point in their lives.
About 5.2 million adults have PTSD during a given year. This is only a small portion of those who have gone through a trauma.
Women are more likely than men to develop PTSD. About 10% of women develop PTSD sometime in their lives compared with 5% of men.
Okay, that's more than one depressing fact, so I'm over quota now. But wait, there's more (which is probably not news to a lot of people either):

23 out of 100 women (23%) reported sexual assault when in the military.
55 out of 100 women (55%) and 38 out of 100 men (38%) have experienced sexual harassment when in the military.

A soldier's job is to face up to this horrible stuff so kids and such don't have to. With that in mind, I propose that veterans with PTSD be "fostered" into homes whose children have been fostered out.

                Bingo.

You frequently hear horror stories about foster homes and abusive foster parents, but those incidents are quite rare. Most of those kids were abused by their biological parents.

Unlikely. More likely is being abused by the live-in boyfriend prior to foster care.

I hear that people who teach deaf children are very likely to be pedophiles.

I think maybe wikipedia said that.
