  • Why private pensions are such a terrible, terrible thing

Are they? I wouldn't know. I'm too poor to have one.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Pensions were generally pretty good. I say "were" because they aren't offered as much anymore. It's all 401k crap now.
To us, it is the BEAST.

If you have a 401k and want a pension you can buy an annuity.

I often wonder if this is the result of the greatly increased mobility of workers. Very rarely do you see anyone spend a career with one company anymore.

Or the fact that final salary schemes are considered too expensive.

Well, it's also because pensions are pretty damned expensive.

From what I understand there's also a ton of regulatory issues with pensions that 401ks don't suffer from.

401(k)s have their own regulatory issues. However, usually companies can set things up so they flow automatically (ie, directly from payroll to TPA), which makes it easier.

Pensions were an awesome idea, but then the old ****s refused to die in a timely fashion. Maybe HFCS will bring pensions back.
