  • What America really needs is more small business owners like this.

Moo Cluck Moo is a local fastfood place in Michigan but what sets it apart is the owner's personal feelings about social justice and his belief that better pay gets you better employees. He's even one upping In 'N 'Out Burger by agreeing to start all of his employees out at $15 per hour. Not bad for a burger flipping job.

Michigan’s Moo Cluck Moo currently pays entry-level workers $12 an hour — far above the state floor of $7.40 — but come October 1, that starting wage will rise to $15, co-owner Brian Parker told the Daily Beast’s Daniel Gross.

Asked why the restaurant, which has only been open since the spring, will raise its wages, Parker told Gross, “We always wanted to be at $15 an hour. It just feels human to do it.”

Who knew Costco was small business?

Fast food and big box retail workers have joined protests asking for higher wages. But Costco seems to have struck a balance between making money and also paying its workers well.

Why would a low wage worker be against higher wages for low wage workers?

Costco has always been a great company to work for (so has UPS) and they have excellent management which takes a long term view on employees. They want the best of the best, they're willing to pay more to get them, and they promote from within as well as invest in employees to improve their skill sets. To compare, Walmart treats its employees as a disposable commodity so they have a real hard time keeping anyone who has any other choice. Walmart will not train or invest in employees in any meaningful way because they expect people to quit in short order. To compare, at Costco it is the norm for people to stay years and years plus it isn't unusual to see employees who are lifers simply because they know the company is treating them well, that it be hard for them to find a comparable job which pays as well (or has similar benefits levels), and the creme de la creme is that Costco is actually much more profitable than Walmart's Sam's Club on most measurements (per store, per employee, per square foot of store, etc...). It's simply a better run and better managed company.

BTW did you notice how Walmart had to pull a 180 on it's plan to push everyone down to part time in order to avoid having to provide health insurance? They had a bunch of full time people quit over it and the part timers just couldn't make up for the skills of the full timers in a cost effective way. Their stores looked like **** (more so than usual) with negative press coverage on empty shelves and customers not being able to find employees to help them so Walmart was forced to give up their unethical dodge of their responsibilities and reinstate people to 40 hours.

Yep, clearly anything this restaurant does is proven to be a viable business model

Which is pretty much following In 'N Out's payment policies though they are taking it to the next level.

Before taxes I think. But taxes for that amount of earning is not high, probably around 13%.
