  • Needle grenades are useful against thin men once you get them too. They tend to take cover spread out far enough to avoid taking out an entire cluster with a frag, but within range of a needle.

    • Needle grenades only do 3 damage so they won't kill thin men.

      • Which is why I said "useful" and not "fatal".

          • Exalt missions are fun as hell. MECs aren't that useful. Gene mods are gamebreaking. Mimetic skin and depth perception are particularly egregious. That's all the observations I have for now.

Thin men also seem more aggressive than sectoids and mutons. The latter two will often setup shop behind good cover and wait for you to make a mistake. Thin men will come charging at you, if you move out of line of sight, making it easy to set up traps. I remember when one ran through a door two of my guys were on overwatch right behind. They were like, "Huh? Where'd this mist suddenly come from?"

And you should have at least one support in your squad, who will have at least one smoke grenade. If you want to survive thin men, that is.

edit: from FM 3-21.8 The Infantry Rifle Platoon and Squad:

So even the field manual uses the word "cover" to refer to something that doesn't literally stop bullets. Moving on.
Smoke either screens (friendly) or obscures (enemy). It doesn't 'cover'. /Marine Corps

Yes I know but the people will know what you mean when you say cover; it even managed to work its way into the field manual apparently.

                    • I thought "cover" was the Marine word for "hat"?
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

                      • Words can have multiple meanings. (also, what I quoted was an army field manual)

                        • Military terminology exists to make very simple concepts sound very complicated.

Anyway, damn. I put 3 of my best un-modified soldiers in for gene therapy (2 colonels and a major). ONE DAY LATER I have the base defense mission. Shiiiit.

Still, managed to get through without losing anyone except for one of the base security mooks they give you. It was pretty hairy though.

No. It exists to provide very specific and clear shared terminology that everyone fully understands. Words mean things.

In my game, XCOM consists of 3 heavies and 4 supports. Only 1 each of assault and sniper have been generated and they both died.

                              • Finally got to July mostly intact. Lost 3 Cols so far to new enemies revealed for the first time. First Mechtoid killed a Col, First Cyberdisk killed a Col, first Heavy Muton killed a Col.

Heavies all day every day unless I need to actually capture (it took me till june to capture)
