  • The future of marriage

My husband is the kindest man in the world. During the seven years we've been married, Ben has done most of the chores without ever being asked.

Wow. I've never been happier to be Catholic than after reading that article.

So don't get married. Or don't marry someone who thinks her "career" as a writer is too important for her to do any household chores.

Just before the birth of our second son, I decided to leave my job and pursue a career as a writer after being offered a generous redundancy package.
I'm too busy to share the chores. After a day of writing, I feel happy and complete; after a day with the children, I am frazzled.
          Yet....

Intimacy is reserved only for his birthdays - and then just the ones with a zero.
While I love my children deeply, wiping noses, bottoms and encrusted beans off the floor doesn't inspire me in the way my work does.
I found him packing the freezer with organic ready meals and ringing round for short-term nannies to take care of our children
It's my fault that he returns home to find no dinner and our children running amok.
And he could never claim breach of contract because he always knew I was a workaholic.
Just before the birth of our second son, I decided to leave my job
          Umm. Yeah, he probably could.

I don't get it. Is this really the 'ideal marriage' for women? Really?

Yeah, this has nothing to do with reversing gender roles or any crap like that. She's just a selfish person. If you don't want to put effort into raising your children, don't have them.

It's what works for them. I wouldn't base any one particular experience on what an 'ideal marriage' is, for nobody...

It's an unhealthy relationship by any reasonable definition. Him staying in it is no more evidence of relationship health than it would be if a battered girlfriend stayed with the abuser.

Yes Ben, Dinodoc's comment was totally controversial.

Ben spends every waking moment worried that someone might not think he is an idiot.

It's still his choice. I also think comparing it to a physically abused girl is a bit too much.

Assuming this story is real and not a very well written troll, (the children's ages and the claim of sex only once a decade give me pause in that regard) it is always someone's choice to stay in an unhealthy relationship. That doesn't mean that it is a smart or practical one that should be praised with a "It obviously works for him" view.

Going by her own words she's emotional abusive to both her husband and children.

It does work for him, or he would have done something about it. I don't find it praiseworthy, and if he were my friend I'd very probably strongly advise him to leave her.

                            Absent/neglecting? yes. Abusive? hardly.

Is there a useful distinction between neglect and abuse?
