    Australian PM running against the conservatives AND Rupert Murdoch

    The election coverage has been unbelievably slanted.

    Since Murdoch controls 75% of the print media, including the popular tabloids and the only newspaper in at least three states, it's a wonder Labor is still in the race at all.

    I can't remember such a Murdoch hatchet job for quite some time. Labor tried to introduce Leveson Inquiry style reforms to the media. Murdoch's dark empire's response has been vicious. Or maybe the old devil just needs to feel powerful again after the kicking he got in the UK and the US elections, who can say?

      Nah they get the media some idiot old loon buys, and the government depends on how much do they ignore said media. Let's see if Australians have risen above fair and balanced news or not?

        Quite possibly the most ridiculous line I've ever seen in a news article:

        The awkward photo came after he was earlier unable to explain a cut on his knuckle and less than forty-eight hours after he was accused of being rude to a make-up artist.

          People choose to read their publications more than other ones.
          There is no evidence of a Newscorp "party line." The Australian and the Daily Telegraph both endorsed Rudd in 2007.
          Many journalists were quite annoyed by the ALP's attempts to licence the press. Unsurprisingly.
          That last bit in particular means that a lot of journalists are not big fans of this government.

              75%?!

              Don't you bastards have anti-trust laws? It would seem owning 75% of the print media would be an obvious concentration of too much power into the hands of one man/company. Just break them up and call it a day.

                  We do.
                  AH got the stats off if memory serves.
                  66% of readership--not ownership.
                  Ownership is 33%.
                  Also, as HC points out, there are online alternatives now that negate the inference that antitrust action is necessary in the case of a print monopoly. Newspapers are dying in Australia just as they are everywhere else because everything is online.

                    Whatever, if he owns the only daily tabloid newspaper in every state that is real power.

                    Murdoch did back Rudd in 2007. He likes to back winners is one theory, like he backed Blair. But this is personal.

                      I don't know whether that's true. But the Victorian tabloid "Herald Sun" didn't. It's NewsCorp owned.

                      As for backing winners, The Australian backed the Labor Victorian Brumby government and commended it as a "good government." The Brumby government was tipped to lose and it did lose to the Liberals.

                      The idea that Murdoch has taken editorial control over his newspapers is simply not backed up by the evidence. The evidence indicates that whoever is responsible for editorial and staff print media appointments at NewsCorp has chosen them more wisely than their competitors given their readership figures, which far exceed those of their competitors.

                              Well luckily the sort of people who get their news from tabloids are the least likely to get off their asses and vote.
