Why would you choose to drive less anywhere than a mile unless you had some kind of disability or had to transport something big/heavy?

The only time I walk anywhere is when I'm on vacation.

I have to get out for a walk at lunchtime now I'm driving to work. Put on 20 pounds when I stopped commuting by train, just dropping the 40 mins walking a day. Got really fat and lazy, it sucked. Walking.

Yeah, I know. I feel a bit guilty owning it.

I've been driving since I was 16 and do a fair amount of driving for my job (500K km in last 10 years).

My problem with walking (and exercise in general) is not the effort but the time. It's not something I "enjoy" and thus interferes with my hedonistic lifestyle.

It doesn't matter. They won't have access to quality health care or food to begin with. I guess the more accurate place to stop HC's beliefs about the poor are with Adam Smith. Perhaps that's only as far as his history classes went. The idea that giving the poor money will get them out of poverty is charmingly naive. It's precisely analogous to saying that we can end hunger by simply producing more food. I'm really surprised that it is being seriously proposed here.

                  Let's see, driving versus walking...

In about an hour's time, I can go about 60-70 miles in any direction. There's a lot to see and do in a 60 mile radius. Or I could live in a city, in which all I'd have is city, within an hour's distance driving or walking thanks to traffic.

Uhm, if you are able to go 60-70 miles in any direction without trouble, the chance is pretty high that you are in wasteland. In an area with public transport in the same time you are pretty sure to find a place where you can get a job.

I'm sorry, I don't understand your question. If we gave them food or healthcare instead of money, what would they have to spend on that short term emergency? Clearly the emergency needs to take precedence, or they wouldn't spend their money on it...

Also, dependents are a totally different story. You'll note that we have free education in all 50 states. That's paternalistic, and rightly so, because the people we are being paternalistic towards are literally children.

Now, first of all, if poor people doesn't have to speculate about health care, they might be able to do things that may improve their livings.

Though, that really isn't a problem for you or your likes - you just pay insane amounts of money to protect you against even the simplest medical incident.

Actually, my health insurance plan has a very high deductible.

Sure - if you earn enough.
