True. But you have to understand, nobody cares about rural America. You are all a bunch of meth-cooking inbred hill people.
To us, it is the BEAST.

Or transportation and fuel is taxed to make it really expensive.

And it's not needed. I didn't get a car until I was 34, even with a well paying full time job, commuting 10 miles each way. It just isn't required for most people here (unless you live in the countryside, but who does these days?)

Credit Unions are a good solution to the short term emergency, and would help with thing like emergency transportation finances. (getting some publicity here at the moment)

Our dirt poor don't have cars, but they don't generally have to get to work either.

Sure but I was assuming The Mad Monk was talking about situations where people live in the middle of nowhere need their transportation to get them to the place they can spend their food stamps or get their healthcare.

Still, giving them the money rather than food stamps doesn't solve the problem. It means they are empowered to choose whether to fix the car, die of an infection or starve to death that week I guess.

                      What's sucky about that?

Plenty of urbanites don't drive until later in life, even in NA (a number that is growing btw).

If your public transit works then people will use it.

I do commute by car now but most weekends don't really need to use it. 15 min walk into town.

Seriously... cities do exist where cars aren't necessary . I know plenty of folks living in NYC who don't have a car.

I totally could have afforded a car, and I had a licence, just my choice to spend the money on other stuff (beer).

One of the guys I work with was detained (not technically arrested) by cops in the states because he tried to walk across the road from his hotel to the convention centre ~ 100m, not busy roads.

He actually has a sight disability so he wasn't legally allowed to drive in the UK, but the cops couldn't understand why he was trying to walk not drive and thought he must be up to no good.

                                Bizarre.
