There were only three Republican governors of Texas in the last, oh, ~140 years but of those three Bill Clements seems the least objectionable. Mostly because he was in office before the Republican Party went full on ********. Thus he comes off as the reasonable one.
Given that his competition is George W Bush and Rick Perry that isn't saying much though.
In other states Chris Christie sometimes actually comes off as reasonable and willing to work for the good of the people of his state plus he has avoided the non-sense his party has pushed in other states like the union busting, the voter suppression attempts, and the near constant Republican desire to force probes into unsuspecting vaginas. I didn't pay much attention (it's New Jersey after all) but my understanding was he did reduce pay, require workers to put more into their own pensions, and cut education spending to help balance the budget but I don't believe he actually tried to pull a Scott Walker where he legally removed worker's rights.
